Our Juneteenth Celebration brought students, employees, and community members together for an afternoon of reflection, culture, and connection. Featuring inspiring musical performances by Myesha Henderson, dance by Brian Bennett and friends, poetry by Msz. England, and a "Freedom in the Future" presentation by Dr. LaWana Richmond, the event honored the significance of Juneteenth while celebrating the history, resilience, and enduring contributions of the Black community. Thank you to the Cultural Events Task Force for hosting their final event of the academic year. View more photos on our SDCCE Flickr.

Student Success at San Diego County Fair

Congratulations to SDCCE ceramics student Gayline Davis, whose book sculpture, Once Upon the Fair, earned the Best of Show Award in the San Diego County Fair Student Showcase. Created in Pamela Kozminska's ARTX 548 class at the Educational Cultural Complex, the award-winning piece represented SDCCE and highlights the exceptional creativity and talent of our students.

SDCCE at NASCAR Anduril 250 Race

San Diego College of Continuing Education was represented at the inaugural Anduril 250 NASCAR Cup Series Race at Naval Base Coronado, helping showcase career pathways that connect students to high-demand welding and manufacturing jobs supporting the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet.

NASCAR Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski was behind the wheel of the No. 6 BuildSubmarines.com Ford Mustang Dark Horse for Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing, which featured SDCCE's logo.

The race highlighted SDCCE's partnership with BuildSubmarines.com and BlueForge Alliance, which awarded the college $1.175 million in 2023 to expand our tuition-free welding program as part of a national effort to prepare more students for careers that support the nation's defense manufacturing industry. Associate Dean Brad Dorschel was also named Buildsubmarines.com "Giant of Skilled Trades" someone who is advancing the mission of skilled trades careers, and had his name displayed on the side of the race car.

  • New flooring is coming to ECC and the project team is coordinating with the contractor to minimize disruptions by providing temporary signage, directional pathways, ADA-accessible restroom trailers, and other accommodations to support continued campus operations and instructional continuity throughout construction. Please see additional details below:

Visit the project webpage to learn more and stay up to date with the progress via livestream.

Thank you to our Theatre Director, Silvia Nogales, for playing a pivotal role in the theatre renovation and for keeping us informed on its progress. You can now follow the theatre on Facebook and Instagram @Educational Cultural Complex Theatre & Community Room.

Bond Projects Update

The current Measure HH Bond projects for our college continue to make progress. We have also developed a current projects page with updates on each project and the SDCCD Measure HH webpage has further updates.

Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging (SIB) Task Force Updates

The Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging (SIB) Task Force meets monthly to further our conversations on continuing to implement proactive strategies for immigration and safety challenges, as well as the importance of reporting any sightings of ICE on campus to the Chancellor or District General Counsel. Reports of ICE near campus (off campus) should first be directed to the COS, who, in collaboration with the Deans, will take appropriate and informed next steps to address the situation.

We have a dedicated webpage with Know Your Rights Information, District protocols, resources, and more curated by our Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging Task Force.

Please take a moment to review the safety cards for navigating ICE incidents on campus. These resources are designed to guide employees on the steps for reporting.

Classified Professional Spotlight

This week's Classified Professional Spotlight shines on ESL Instructional Assistant, Pierre-Herardy Dumornay.

Pierre-Herardy Dumornay first joined SDCCE as an ESL student after arriving in the United States. Since then, he has served as a Project Assistant and now as an Instructional Assistant in the ESL department, while also pursuing his educational goals as a transfer student at San Diego City College.

As a former ESL student, Pierre is passionate about helping others navigate a new country and educational system. He finds fulfillment in supporting students, building their confidence, and helping them achieve their goals. Over the past three years, he has become an active member of the SDCCE community, serving as an interpreter, representing the college at the A²Mend Summit, and helping prepare the Knowledge Bowl team that earned second place.

Originally from Haiti, Pierre believes in the transformative power of education and lifelong learning. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, listening to music, fishing, reading, trying new recipes, hiking, and learning new languages.

Faculty Spotlight

This week's Spotlight shines on one of our Adjunct Counselors, Victor Gonzalez.

Victor Gonzalez is a proud San Diego Community College District success story. After attending Mesa College to complete his general education coursework, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and a Master's in Education with a concentration in Counseling from San Diego State University.

Victor's connection to SDCCE began as a teenager when he accompanied family members to West City Campus to enroll in English classes. He later returned as an Auto Body student and, in 2018, joined SDCCE as a Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Youth Program Case Manager. Today, he serves as an Adjunct Counselor at the same campus that first welcomed him and his family.

As a DACA recipient, Victor is passionate about supporting immigrant students and helping them achieve their educational goals. Outside of work, he enjoys jogging, taking sewing classes at West City Campus, and spending time with his wife and two children.

President's Updates

I am excited to attend the California Community College Black CEO Retreat in Sacramento, California during the first part of the week and will be back on campus later this week. This annual retreat brings together Black leaders dedicated to advancing equity, excellence, and student success in higher education. The retreat features engaging panel discussions, wellness and mental health sessions, team-building activities, and valuable networking opportunities. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and collaborate with colleagues who are committed to strengthening leadership and creating meaningful impact across our community colleges.

The Research Corner

This week, we invite you to read a blog post "Who's Leaving California - and Who's Moving In?" by Public Policy Institute of California. Over the past 25 years California has had its slowest rates of population growth ever recorded. The primary driver of this slowdown has been California residents moving to other states. The affordability crisis, especially housing costs, has played a key role, with lower-income households much more likely to leave the state than higher-income households. The post may be found on the following link: https://www.ppic.org/blog/whos-leaving-california-and-whos-moving-in/. Please take a minute to review this resource and email [email protected] if you have any questions.
