Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging (SIB) Task Force Updates:

The Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging (SIB) Task Force meets monthly to further our conversations on continuing to implement proactive strategies for immigration and safety challenges, as well as the importance of reporting any sightings of ICE on campus to the Chancellor or District General Counsel. Reports of ICE near campus (off campus) should first be directed to the COS, who, in collaboration with the Deans, will take appropriate and informed next steps to address the situation.

We have a dedicated webpage with Know Your Rights Information, District protocols, resources, and more curated by our Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging Task Force.

Please take a moment to review the safety cards for navigating ICE incidents on campus. These resources are designed to guide employees on the steps for reporting.

Classified Professional Spotlight

This week's Classified Professional Spotlight shines on our Research Assistant III, Remy Feldman.

Remy brings a strong passion for research and data-informed decision-making to SDCCE. Before joining the college, Remy served as a research assistant with the Marriage and Close Relationships Lab at UCLA and the Sexual Health and Relationships Lab at York University. Remy also worked as a teaching assistant for research methods courses at UCLA, Saddleback College, and Dominican University from 2022–2024.

A firm believer that "data saves lives," Remy is passionate about ensuring research is representative of diverse communities and helps inform meaningful change. Although Remy officially joined SDCCE in December, she says her team has already become like family.

Outside of work, Remy enjoys skiing, reading, and spending time with loved ones—especially sharing laughs, which she considers her favorite activity. She lives by two guiding principles: never postpone joy and always ask the question.

Faculty Spotlight

This week's Faculty Spotlight shines on ESL Instructor, Marla Goldfine.

For more than 32 years, Marla Goldfine has dedicated her career to teaching English and empowering immigrant students at SDCCE. From her very first classroom in a converted garage with few resources to teaching nearly every ESL course the college offers, Marla has inspired thousands of students through creativity, compassion, and perseverance.

Beyond the classroom, Marla has contributed to curriculum development, course assessments, committee leadership, and numerous college initiatives. She describes teaching adult immigrants as her true passion and believes the greatest reward has been building supportive learning communities where both students and instructors grow together. Outside of work, Marla enjoys spending time in nature, writing poetry, exploring new places, having meaningful conversations, and cooking and baking for others.

Marla Goldfine

Do you know an employee making a difference at SDCCE? Help us recognize those outstanding contributions by submitting an Employee Spotlight! Selected spotlights will be featured in future editions of the weekly President's Message and other college communications as we celebrate the people who make SDCCE an exceptional place to learn and work.

As we update our CE Birthday List, employees who would like to receive a birthday greeting from President King are invited to complete the Birthday List Form; if you've already signed up, no further action is needed.

A reminder that all San Diego College of Continuing Education campuses are closed on Fridays for the summer. Campuses will resume normal Monday to Friday operations after August 14.

Visit the Administrative Services Intranet to access campus safety resources and stay informed with the latest updates.

A reminder that all requests of the Communications Department must be approved by a dean or vice president and requires submission of a request form. You can find the Project Request Form link on the Faculty and Staff Resources Page of our website. Allow ten working days for a request to be completed. If a request needs immediate attention, please complete the form and contact the Public Information Officer.

For SDCCE professional development opportunities, visit the professional development web page for upcoming workshops.

President's Updates:

a group of people Tina King

Myself and fellow district leaders officially met with Congressman Juan Vargas, for the $500,000 check presentation for utility and water infrastructure improvements at the Educational Cultural Complex. We are deeply grateful to Congressman Vargas for his continued partnership and unwavering commitment to expanding opportunities for adult learners.

I recently had the opportunity to see the new terrazzo flooring in the south wing of the Educational Cultural Complex, and it's exciting to see this project taking shape. Thank you for your patience and flexibility throughout the construction process and flooring updates as we continue to ensure services remain available to our students during these improvements. This is another important milestone that brings us one step closer to opening our new theater!

The Research Corner:

This week, we invite you to look at a California's Population Fact Sheet by Public Policy Institute of California. More people live in California than any other state in the nation and California's population is one of the most diverse in the nation. The Fact Sheet may be found on the following link: https://www.ppic.org/publication/californias-population/. Please take a minute to review this resource and email [email protected] if you have any questions.
