The sound of sneakers squeaking across the court, the roar of a cheering crowd, and a shared mission to support students will come together this spring as the San Diego College of Continuing Education Foundation hosts its First Annual Hoop Hysteria basketball fundraiser.

Set for Sunday, April 12, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the event will take place at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA in Southeastern San Diego, bringing together community members, students, supporters, and local personalities for a day of basketball, connection, and philanthropy. The event is free and open to the public with VIP packages also available. Registration for the event is now open.

Hoop Hysteria is more than a tournament—it is a community-driven effort to raise critical funds that help meet the basic needs of students attending the college. Proceeds from the event will support student support programs, including basic needs and food security initiatives that help ensure learners can focus on their education rather than worrying about where their next meal will come from.

Basketball Meets Community Impact

The event will feature a lineup of activities designed to engage the broader San Diego community. Alongside the basketball competition, attendees will be able to explore a community resource fair, connecting them with local organizations and services that support education, employment, and wellness.

Local food vendors will also be on site, giving guests the opportunity to enjoy a variety of food while cheering on the players.

A highlight of the day will be a celebrity basketball game featuring former and current athletes and media personalities, including former NBA forward Dominique McGuire, former NFL wide receiver Tyrell Williams, former professional basketball player Justin M. Johnson, rapper Rob $tone, artist JayKeo, former college athlete and current college dean Andrei Lucas, with additional guests expected to be announced.

The Foundation hopes the event will raise significant funds while strengthening the relationship between the college and the community it serves.

“This event is about bringing people together for a common purpose—supporting our students,” said Dr. Tami Foy, executive director of the San Diego College of Continuing Education Foundation. “Hoop Hysteria allows us to celebrate community spirit while raising critical resources that help our students overcome barriers and stay focused on achieving their educational and career goals.”

The San Diego College of Continuing Education is one of the largest providers of free adult education in California, offering workforce training, ESL classes, high school diploma and equivalency programs, and career education pathways.

Community partnerships and philanthropic support play a vital role in ensuring students have access to the tools they need to succeed.

“Events like Hoop Hysteria demonstrate the power of community engagement,” said Dr. Tina M. King, president of the San Diego College of Continuing Education. “Our students come to us with incredible determination and potential. By supporting initiatives like this, our community is helping ensure that every student has the opportunity to pursue their education and build a brighter future.”

A Call for the Community to Get in the Game

Organizers encourage individuals, businesses, and community groups to participate by sponsoring the event, volunteering, or simply attending to cheer from the sidelines.

With basketball as the backdrop—and a day filled with celebrity appearances, community resources, and local food—Hoop Hysteria aims to showcase the power of collaboration in San Diego. When the community shows up for students, everyone scores.
