Coretta Scott King Brunch

Introduction

Since 1972 important historical events occurred at the Educational Cultural Complex (ECC) that impacted the history of American civil rights. Most major events associated with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day/ Weekend in San Diego were founded and organized at ECC, including the annual Parade, King and Queen Pageant, Annual Educator's Breakfast, and eventually the multicultural community festival. In addition ECC leaders drove the work of the California Commission to establish Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a Federal Holiday.

Shortly after the federal holiday was established, the late, great Coretta Scott King came to ECC to host a three-day symposium to thank SDCE for leading the national campaign to celebrate her husband's legacy. We often celebrate the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but his wife stood by his side and then furthered the legacy of her husband and his noble work for decades to follow. We at SDCE celebrate Ms. King for her efforts to lead the continuous struggle for social justice and inclusion for all!
