Students dress up for Día de los Muertos at San Diego College of Continuing Education
“We look forward to having the community come together for a beautiful Día de los Muertos celebration. Izcalli puts on an exciting traditional show for all ages,” said Tina M. King, Ed.D., SDCCE President.
Activist and Executive Director of Izcalli, Macedonio Arteaga Jr., will teach the meanings of Día De Los Muertos from the symbols, stories to the ritual of creating an altar. Following the making of an altar, the Izcalli troupe will accompany Arteaga to perform “They Arrive with the Butterflies” a storytelling dance told with traditional Mayan and Aztec instruments. Attendees are invited to bring an item in remembrance of their loved ones.
Teatro Izcalli is a San Diego county-based organization established in 1993 by a group of young Latino and Native American activists to transform the lives of Chicana/o and Indigenous communities by promoting cultural consciousness through the arts, education, and dialogue.
SDCCE is one of California’s largest providers of free workforce training and classes. Adult students achieve a high school diploma and/or career training certificates to increase their wages and advance their careers. Mid semester classes begin Monday, November 7, 2022.
