In recognition of Undocumented Student Success Week in unity with California Community Colleges, San Diego College of Continuing Education is spotlighting the individuals who make its dedication to immigrant and undocumented student success possible, including Fatima Mota, the incoming counselor for the Immigrant Student Success Program.
“Many of our students arrive in the U.S. as professionals, educators, and skilled workers from their home countries,” stated Mota. “At the College of Continuing Education, they are not starting over, they are continuing their journey with the support and education needed to thrive and once again serve as leaders in their communities.”
Her journey into higher education began at home. Born in San Bernardino, California, to parents from Mexico, Mota grew up translating for her mother and witnessing the challenges that can arise from language barriers. “I became her translator and advocate, seeing how people were mistreated simply because they didn’t speak English,” she said. “That experience ignited my passion to be a voice for those who are often unheard.”
Her path to earning a Master’s degree from National University was long and challenging. “My journey was not easy, but it was guided by the love of my family, a strong foundation of morals and values, and an unshakable will to persevere. I know the importance of family. I know what it means to struggle. My father only completed a third-grade education because he had to work at the age of nine to help support his family,” she shared. “I carry that history with me. The resilience, the sacrifice, and the determination I saw every day in my parents. It shaped who I am and fuels the work I do for our students and community.”
Mota was drawn to Continuing Education because of its diverse and resilient student body. “Our students are some of the most resilient individuals I’ve encountered, people who come from all corners of the world, each bringing rich cultures and unique stories to our campuses. Every interaction with them is an opportunity to create a safe space where they feel valued.”
Through programs like Immigrant Student Success, the college’s commitment to immigrant, refugee, English language learners, and undocumented students remains steadfast. The program paired with free English as a Second Language (ESL), Citizenship, and High School Diploma/Equivalency courses is helping immigrants and refugees increase their earnings and apply for college. With Immigrant Student Success counseling students gain access to specialized referrals, resources, and scholarships.
“These opportunities are keys that unlock a student’s full potential,” Mota said. “For many, these programs provide critical tools and support systems to overcome systemic barriers, whether learning English, navigating the immigration process, or finding a safe and welcoming community.”
“When students walk into our college’s Immigrant Student Success Center, I want them to know they are safe and cared for, they can focus on building lives of self-sufficiency, confidence, and joy.”
Looking ahead, Mota is excited about expanding the program's legal clinics in partnership with Jewish Family Service’s Higher Education Legal Services, PANA, Haitian Bridge Alliance, and Alliance San Diego. She also anticipates expanding “Know Your Rights” workshops and collaborating with campus programs like BeWell and Rising Scholars to reach more students.
Prior to becoming the college’s Immigrant Student Success Program counselor, Mota served as both a CalWORKs counselor and instructor. Before Continuing Education, she was a case manager and transitional facilitator at New Alternatives Inc. and an associate instructor at Miracosta College.
