Community Welcome for Día de los Muertos Performance, in-person and virtually

SDCCE celebrates Día de los Muertos with traditional altar makingOn Wednesday, November 3 from 12-1:00 p.m. San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) will host an in-person and live virtual Día de los Muertos celebration, “They Arrive with the Butterflies” in partnership with Izcalli. The event is being held on Zoom and outdoors at the Educational Cultural Complex (4343 Ocean View Blvd, San Diego, CA 92113).

The performance supported by SDCCE’s Associated Student Body (ASB) with funding from the office of District 1 County Supervisor Nora Vargas, as a part of the County of San Diego Community Enhancement Grant Program is free and open to the public. Following COVID-19 safety protocols, masks and social distancing will be followed for in-person participation.

To honor the indigenous roots of Mexico the Executive Director of Izcalli, Macedonio Arteaga Jr., will narrate ancient stories of the Americas, and teach participants to honor departed loved ones through ofrendas or altars. Izcalli musicians will accompany Arteaga with traditional Mayan and Aztec instruments. SDCCE will be serving Pan de Muertos made by Pan del Barrio.

SDCCE is the noncredit college within the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD). San Diego residents can enroll in free Citizenship, English as a Second (ESL) classes, achieve a high school diploma and/or career training certificate at SDCCE and then transition to a SDCCD college, City, Mesa or Miramar.
