Grand Opening for new high-tech North City Campus

State-of-the-art San Diego Continuing Education facility supports technology, multimedia and information technology programs

What:   Grand Opening to celebrate San Diego Continuing Education’s newest campus, the state-of-the-art North City Campus, a new two-story, 42,000-square-foot facility serving as Continuing Education’s Campus of Excellence for Business and Information Technology.  The facility is the latest San Diego Community College District project by the District’s $1.555 billion Propositions S and N construction bond program.

Background:

The North City Campus is a new, two‐story, 42,000-square-foot facility designated as the Campus of Excellence for Business and Information Technology for San Diego Continuing Education. The new facility will provide state‐of‐the‐art technology in all classrooms and computer labs, expansive multipurpose areas, and numerous student gathering areas.  The new facility will also house Disability Support Programs and Services (DSPS). The project is on track to obtain a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, one of a total of 41 projects in the District awarded or tracking certifications.  The project included land acquisition and construction of a two-story parking structure, completed in January 2012 as the first phase of the project.

Sustainable Features:

·         Open-entry courtyard providing daylighting and natural ventilation opportunities to the majority of the interior spaces

·         Low-E glazing to maximize natural daylight and reduce energy demands for artificial lighting and cooling

·         Highly efficient mechanical systems will reduce energy consumption and exceed state energy efficiency standards by 35% Daylight sensors automatically dim lights in response to available lighting

·         Operable windows for natural ventilation with sensors to shut down mechanical units when windows are open

·         Low-flow plumbing fixtures will reduce water consumption by over 30% compared to standard fixtures

·         Materials with high recycled content

·         A minimum of 75% of construction waste will be diverted from the local landfill

·         Water-efficient landscaping with high‐efficiency drip irrigation system

·         Drywell for treating storm runoff on site

·         Green roof
