Obed Morales Betanzo, 25, enrolled in the Child Development program at San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) to begin his career working with kids. During the semester, Betanzo volunteered across San Diego with youth programs applying skills he learned in the classroom. “SDCCE provided the foundational knowledge for what I am passionate about,” he said. “I learned child safety, how to prepare for emergencies, and adult and infant CPR.” SDCCE selected Betanzo to be a part of the first San Diego Promise cohort, a scholarship program that provides two years of tuition-free college. He used the Promise to transition to San Diego City College. Following City College, he transferred to San Diego State University (SDSU) to earn a Bachelor’s degree in child and family development. This fall he will begin a graduate program at SDSU to further his goal of working in the mental health field.
