While Tipton is well-known in the fashion world, becoming a design instructor felt like a natural evolution for her. “Throughout my journey in the fashion industry, I realized that my true passion goes beyond just creating beautiful clothing—it’s about empowering others to find their own creative voice. I’ve always believed that fashion is for everyone, and teaching allows me to share my knowledge, experience, and love for design with aspiring creators who are just starting their journey.”
“As a college, we take immense pride in bringing instructors with real-world industry experience to our classrooms. Ashley Nell Tipton’s success as a prominent designer and her experience on Project Runway provides invaluable insights to our students, bridging the gap between classroom learning and the demands of the fashion industry. Her expertise will not only inspire but also prepare our students to succeed in a rapidly evolving and competitive field,” said College of Continuing Education President Dr. Tina M. King.
Dean Myesha Jackson echoed President King’s sentiments saying, “Our Clothing and Textiles Program is designed to be dynamic, innovative, and deeply connected to industry trends. With instructors like Ashley Nell Tipton, we offer students the opportunity to learn from a true trailblazer in the fashion world. Through hands-on learning in our state-of-the-art fiber technology lab and diverse certificate programs, we equip students with the skills and confidence to thrive as both creators and entrepreneurs, ensuring they are ready to make their mark in the industry.”
Tipton grew up in Encanto, San Diego and has been teaching college students for five years, beginning her career in academia at Palomar College. “I remember how challenging it was when I first entered the industry, and now I want to be the mentor I wish I had. Teaching gives me the opportunity to break down barriers, encourage self-expression, and help students develop the confidence to embrace their unique style. Seeing my students grow and discover their own creative potential is just as fulfilling as launching a new collection. It’s all about giving back to the community that has supported me and inspiring the next generation of designers,” she said.
At the College of Continuing Education, Tipton is teaching large populations of immigrants and refugees, who desire to learn new skills to build a sustainable life in the US, as well as student entrepreneurs eager to launch their own brand.
“What’s special to me about teaching at the College of Continuing Education is the incredible diversity and resilience of the students. Each individual brings a unique perspective and story to the classroom. I find it so inspiring to be part of their journey, helping them build new skills and confidence in themselves.”
She added, “teaching here feels like a full-circle moment for me because I once took classes at SDCCE to advance my own education and skills. I know firsthand how valuable these programs are and how they can open doors to new opportunities.” Before graduating from Fashion Careers College, Tipton studied at the College of Continuing Education.
Back on the runway, Tipton remains deeply involved in the clothing and textiles industry and can be seen always working on projects that fuel her creativity. She is currently expanding her own collection and collaborating with Sure Grip International to create a fashion-forward skate boot.
