San Diego College of Continuing Education supports Undocumented Student Week of Action

October 18, 2021

Immigrants and Refugees achieve American Citizenship through free classes at SDCCESan Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) is standing with California Community Colleges during Undocumented Student Week of Action (USAW) beginning Monday, October 18 with a series of virtual forums and films.

The state Chancellor’s Office is calling on students, faculty and staff at all 116 colleges across California to advocate for Congress to include a comprehensive pathway to citizenship for undocumented students and make them eligible for federally funded financial aid within budget reconciliation.

For more than one hundred years, SDCCE has provided accessible pathways for undocumented adults to become American citizens. Students prepare for the United States (US) Naturalization Ceremony through free citizenship classes — curriculum covers English language skills, American history, and government. Students participate in mock Immigration interviews.

Citizenship students can concurrently enroll at SDCCE in free English as Second Language (ESL), and High School Diploma/Equivalency classes. Graduates are ready to transition to career training programs in emerging fields from cybersecurity to healthcare, also offered for no cost at SDCCE, join the workforce, or apply for college.

“More than half of the student population at SDCCE identifies as immigrants, refugees, and English learners,” said Kay Faulconer Boger, Ed.D., SDCCE’s Interim President. “We are proud to stand with California Community Colleges as allies and to welcome the public to learn more about the critical needs of undocumented students.”

The state Chancellor’s Office will hold daily webinars at 1:00 p.m. during USAW, other events listed are presented by SDCCE’s Immigrant-Based Support Program (ISP). Events are free and open to the public:
