San Diego Continuing Education Hosts Community Día De Los Muertos Event

Students honor loved ones during Día de los Muertos at San Diego Continuing EducationThe Southeastern San Diego community is invited to observe Día de los Muertos at San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE) to celebrate departed loved ones through ofrendas or altars, music, storytelling, face painting and pan de muerto. The free and open to the public family-friendly event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 31, 2019 at the Educational Cultural Complex (4343 Ocean View Blvd. San Diego, CA 92113).

At the heart of the tradition is a joyful commemoration of life, students will share their knowledge of Latinx/Hispanic culture with the community through a school-wide altar competition, to honor the deceased through rich offerings such as photographs, food and flowers. Participating classrooms include Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Wellness Management, Adaptive Art and Crafts, Culinary Arts and Science, and Business Information Worker.

Students and faculty will begin construction and decorations for altars as early as 10:00 a.m. The event and altar competition will kick off at 11:00 a.m. in SDCE’s foyer, followed by sugar skull face painting and entertainment by Radio Latina. Attendees are encouraged to bring something to remember their beloved friends and family members.

The yearly Día de los Muertos Altar Class Competition and Cultural Celebration is supported by the Associated Student Body of SDCE’s Educational Cultural Complex.

SDCE was named Entrepreneurial College of the Year by the National Association of Community College Entrepreneurship. Along with seven campuses and 200 offsite locations, SDCE, is part of the award-winning San Diego Community College District (SDCCD). Many students achieve a high school diploma and/or career training certificate at SDCE and then transition to a SDCCD college, City, Mesa or Miramar.
