November 6, 2018

Veteran students participate in San Diego Continuing Education’s Honoring All Who Served, veteran-focused resource fairSan Diego Continuing Education (SDCE) will host, Honoring All Who Served, a veteran-focused resource fair on Friday, Nov 9., at Educational Cultural Complex (ECC). Admission to the event is free and open to the San Diego military community.

Veteran workshops kick off at 10:00 a.m. with the Honoring All Who Served resource fair, from 12:00 p.m. to 2 p.m. at ECC’s Main Foyer. The fair offers information about SDCE’s free short-term career training programs and beyond the classroom support to aid students with verified disabilities and those who are facing food insecurity and other basic needs barriers.

SDCE’s President Carlos O. Turner Cortez, Ph.D., said the goal of the collaboration is to promote access to higher education and career development to fully prepare military service men and women to enter the workforce or transition to college.

Honoring All Who Served Events at SDCE include:

10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. | Career Training Opportunities | Room 169

11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. | Career Readiness for Veterans | Room 169

12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. | SDCE Resource Fair | ECC’s Main Foyer

SDCE offers active-duty, military spouses and veterans 70+ free career training programs and pathways to employment and college. Auto Technician, Auto Body and Paint Technician, Upholstery, and Shielded Metal Arc Welding are SDCE’s VA approved certificate programs.

SDCE’s Educational Cultural Complex is located at 4343 Ocean View Blvd. San Diego, CA 92113, just a few miles away from General Dynamics NASSCO, the world leader in shipbuilding and largest full-service shipyard on the West Coast.

Last year, SDCE announced a partnership with Butte County Office of Education’s Veterans Outreach Program (VOP) to expand efforts toward targeting veterans and the re-entry population. Veterans participate in a 6-month paid apprenticeship with CalTRANs and enroll in a career development course with SDCE to achieve work readiness. The next career development (or readiness) course at SDCE will begin later this month.

“Veterans Outreach Program allows SDCE the opportunity to engage with Veteran students in a way that hasn’t been done before. VOP connects students that have faced barriers and challenges with SDCE to access adult education and job readiness.” said Maureen Rubalcaba, SDCE’s Dean of Student Equity. “This partnership has afforded SDCE to reach veterans who may not be aware of available programs and services.”

SDCE is the adult education division of the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD). Nearly 14,000 active-duty and non-active duty military, military veterans, and military spouses and dependents are enrolled throughout the SDCCD.
