SDCCE ESL Students Take Learning Beyond the Classroom at the San Diego Zoo

December 19, 2025

ESL students explore the San Diego Zoo, practicing English and enjoying a cultural immersion experience together. The San Diego Zoo is a world-renowned destination, attracting travelers from across the globe. But for San Diego College of Continuing Education students who came to the city to learn English, the zoo offered a special surprise: an opportunity to practice English and enjoy a cultural immersion experience as part of their class.

On Friday, November 14, 2025, eight English a Second Language (ESL) classes from the College of Continuing Education came together for this unforgettable field trip, embracing the popular American motto: “Rain or shine, here we are!” Rain couldn’t stop the excitement as students explored the zoo’s exhibits, from flamingos to giraffes, umbrellas and ponchos in tow.

Students enrolled in beginner to advanced level ESL courses practiced English through interactive zoo activities, conversation tasks, and casual chats with classmates from other campuses. Many shared that this was their first zoo visit and they were thrilled it was free, thanks to the college’s commitment to accessible adult education.

“Experiential learning is essential for language development,” said Dr. Bita Bookman, Dean of the ESL Program. “It allows students to practice English in authentic settings and build confidence using the language in academic and everyday contexts.”

Special thanks to Andres Avellaneda, who coordinated transportation, logistics, and entry for dozens of students, ensuring a smooth, memorable day despite the rain.

The College of Continuing Education offers free English as a Second Language (ESL), Citizenship, and High School Diploma/Equivalency courses for adults 18 and older year-round. These programs combine classroom learning with cultural enrichment, creating opportunities for students to practice English, explore new environments, and grow as engaged members of the community. Many foreign born professionals start in ESL classes and transition to workforce training within the college.

Free ESL classes begin on January 22, 2026 for the spring semester. Enroll now or learn more at SDCCE.EDU
