Southeastern San Diego Benefits from Free Farm to Family Fair

November 6, 2019

Student Ambassadors serve Southeastern San Diego community with free fresh produce

On Wednesday, November 6, 2019 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE) will give away free fresh produce to low-income and underserved families across Southeastern San Diego at the Educational Cultural Complex (4343 Ocean View Blvd. San Diego, CA 92113). The event is free and open to the public.

SDCE, California’s largest noncredit institution, hosts Farm to Family Fair, every first Wednesday of the month, in partnership with SDCE Foundation, Feeding San Diego, and Project New Village. In addition to a variety of free fresh produce, attendees will have access to a Health and Resource Fair. Healthcare providers, Kaiser Permanente, and San Ysidro Health Clinic will be tabling along with many community organizations including, Groundwork San Diego, San Diego Gas & Electric, Center for Sustainable Energy, and San Diego City Libraries.

“Food insecurity isn't a one-time problem," said SDCE President, Carlos O. Turner Cortez, Ph.D. “SDCE’s food distribution and resource fair coincides with an institution wide effort to overcome poverty and inequity in education, and specifically supports one of SDCE’s Six Pillars: food security.”

Since the grand opening of SDCE’s Farm to Family Fair in December 2018, the school has distributed more than 10,000 lbs. of produce once a month to the Southeastern San Diego community. The free on campus resource has been visited by many city leaders, including Mayor Kevin Faulconer, District Attorney Summer Stephan, Councilmember David Alvarez, Councilmember Georgette Gomez, and Councilmember Monica Montgomery.

Beginning Monday November 4, 2019 to November 18, 2019, SDCE, alongside San Diego and Imperial Counties Community College Association (SDICCCA) campuses are partnering with Cal Coast Credit Union for Pack the Pantry, a 2-week food drive to combat basic needs and hunger on local community college campuses. Each campus is hosting collection bins for nonperishable food items.
