San Diego, CA. — Today, Mariah Hoffman, was announced the second place winner in the Doing What Matters Get a Taste of Success Business Idea Pitch Competition.

The California Community Colleges philanthropic contest encourages high school and college students to identify a problem, challenge or issue they are passionate about and design creative solutions to solve it. Select contestants present their ideas before a panel of judges in San Diego and Sacramento.

San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE) business student Hoffman pitched her brand, Micro Modula, a mobile creative design studio for women that is meant to raise awareness of gender equity in architecture and to empower women to advance in their professions. The social good project was chosen as the top college business idea in the San Diego region.

Mariah enrolled into the small business program at SDCE in hopes of expanding her minimalist lifestyle company. “Micro Modula is unique and is the only mobile studio of its kind that focuses on the creative advancement of women,” she said.

Hoffman represented San Diego against 9 other regions in the state-side competition and soon after made it to the top 3 finalists, where she competed recently in Sacramento, CA. She finished second place winning $1,000.

“It can be very intimidating for the students to pitch their business ideas, some for the first time to the public outside of the class,” said Matthew Rivaldi, SDCE Faculty member. “Mariah Hoffman made the presentation look easy. She was confident, articulate and professional.”

SDCE offers thousands of low cost classes and more than 60 short-term career certificate programs including Computers and IT, Fashion, and health care, serving 44,000+ students annually. Last year more than 2,000 students transitioned to the San Diego Community College District’s (SDCCD’s) credit colleges, City, Mesa and Miramar.

Hoffman will be available tonight for interviews at SDCE’s Entrepreneur Pitch event held at the Cesar E. Chavez Campus in the heart of Barrio Logan, from 6-8:00p.m. For more information, EventBrite

Free business classes and career training programs run throughout the summer at SDCE campuses. New classes are beginning this month. Visit sdce. edu for enrollment information.
