African American Male Education Network Mixer AttendeesJoin me and our San Diego Community College District colleagues at the annual San Diego Pride Parade on Saturday, July 20! This year’s parade theme is "Making History Now!" To attend, please register through the college district’s Pride Parade webpage. Free T-shirts will be given out to the first 400 participants.

Last week, we held the first-ever mixer for the African American Male Education Network and Development Student Charter! The A2MEND-BSSP initiative is designed to support African American/Black men at the San Diego College of Continuing Education. The mixer was an opportunity for attendees to connect with African American/Black professionals and business leaders in the San Diego community for career guidance and personal development.

It's an honor to highlight Henry Nguyen, an ESL educator and instructor at San Diego College of Continuing Education! Henry is an alumnus of SDCCE who, after moving to San Diego from Vietnam, began his journey as an ESL student and continued on to earn degrees at UC San Diego and the University of San Diego before coming back full circle to teach ESL as a faculty member.

"Without [SDCCE], without the soul and the people who work here, all the faculty, and the classified staff, I wouldn't be here today. I wouldn't be able to get my education, and I wouldn't be able to speak English like I'm speaking right now." - Henry Walter Tan Nguyen

Thank you for all that you do for our students and community here in San Diego, Henry! We are proud to have had you as a student and are proud to have you now as a faculty member.

Kelly Metz-Matthews and ESL students in IndonesiaI am also honored to highlight another ESL faculty member this week, Dr. Kelly Metz-Matthews! Dr. Metz-Matthews is currently in Indonesia serving as an English Language Specialist with the U.S. Department of State. During her time there, she will be conducting a series of workshops, a national webinar, and a conference plenary talk on ESL education while sharing the San Diego College of Continuing Education's work within our robust ESL programs.

Congratulations Dr. Kelly Metz-Matthews on this incredible opportunity!

We are thrilled to announce that new furniture, carefully selected after gathering extensive input, will be delivered to the Mid City campus for the new student lounge. This enhancement will significantly improve the ability to provide top-notch service to students.

For SDCCE professional development opportunities, visit the professional development webpage for upcoming workshops.

President's Updates

special visiting class of San Diego State University doctoral students

It was a pleasure to showcase the San Diego College of Continuing Education last week to a special visiting class of San Diego State University doctoral students! As students in the Ed.D. in community college leadership, the class had the opportunity to attend a presentation highlighting accomplishments for the school in equity and community engagement, as well as a tour of our campuses and get to know some of the amazing programs and classes we offer.

Wheelhouse fellows cohort

I am honored to be chosen as a 2024 Wheelhouse Fellow for the California Community Colleges CEO Institute on Leadership. I am joined by an accomplished group of Presidents, Superintendent/Presidents, and Chancellors representing 19 colleges and districts that collectively serve 400,000+ students statewide. I look forward to working with them on case study sessions, student-centered leadership dialogues, active peer learning, networking, reflection, and renewal.

The Research Corner

This week, we invite you to check the report Senior Care Workforce Needs Study from our friends at the Centers of Excellence. This report looks at the workforce needs within the senior care industry to help identify key aspects to come up with recommendations for employees and colleges working to train future students in this sector. Please take a minute to review this resource and email if you have any questions.
