Input Needed to Revise Mission and Vision Statements

As part of both the Accreditation and Strategic Planning efforts in Continuing Education, review and approval by all shareholder groups of our mission is required. Examples of possible stakeholders are Governing Board, Administration, Faculty, Support Staff, Students and community/advisory groups. The efforts to date have generated the following mission statement as the most preferred but still requiring modification (for example, the final mission statement will be 20-30 words and will not include a bulleted list):

San Diego Continuing Education will facilitate student success by providing (order has been changed):

  • Access and equity
  • Quality learning opportunities and student support services
  • Training and career advancement
  • Pathways to college
  • Innovative instruction
  • Community outreach
  • Lifelong learning
  • Affordable education

At the request of some shareholders, review of what WASC Postsecondary Manual indicates should be included in the mission statement was done. WASC stipulates the following should be incorporated in the mission statement:

Mission — the school’s educational mission must be clearly defined, adopted, and published by its governing Board. The mission must identify its broad educational purposes, its intended student population, and its commitment to successful student learning. The mission must be foundational for institutional planning and school decision-making processes.

At the 1/11/16 Strategic Planning meeting, it was agreed that our existing mission does not clearly identify Continuing Education’s:

     (1) broad educational purpose

     (2) intended student population

     (3) commitment to successful student learning

Therefore we are requesting suggestions from our various stakeholders how we can capture these key components in our mission statement.

Please submit all suggested changes to Jane Signaigo-Cox at jsignaig@sdccd.edu by Monday, January 25, 2016.
