New Acting Dean of Student Equity

As San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE) continues to build our leadership team through reorganization and new hiring, I’m pleased to announce that Esther Matthew, has accepted the position as the Acting Dean of Student Equity, to begin today, August 15, 2016. Esther Matthew began her career at SDCE as an instructional faculty member in the Parent Education program. During that time she earned her Master of Arts degree in Counseling at the University of San Diego. Esther then became a counselor for SDCE in 1998 and served in that capacity until January, 2016 when she began serving as SDCE's Acting Vice President of Instruction (VPI) and Student Services. As of March, 2016 the position was split and for the past five months, Esther has filled the role of Acting VPI. Her responsibilities included overseeing daily operational duties for six campuses and offsite locations, instructional and budgetary program planning, serving as a member of the executive team, serving on administrative committees and representing SDCE at District administrative meetings. Esther attributes her administrative ability to the combination of her academic experience and leadership involvement. She dedicated nine years to the executive team of the SDCE Academic Senate, including four years as president. Her responsibilities consisted of advocating for SDCE and faculty interests, chairing and participating in numerous participatory governance committees, ensuring the effective involvement of faculty in the development of policy and procedures, maintaining familiarity with the statutory context in which the senate and noncredit operates, and collaborating on District and institutional initiatives. Esther’s final years of senate presidency encompassed state-level involvement as a member of three committees for the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCC). She also established the state-wide Noncredit Ad Hoc Committee, provided recommendations on proposed revisions to Title 5 regulations as part of the California consultation process and presented at regional and state events. Please join me in congratulating her on this new appointment.

Sincerely,

Carlos O. Turner Cortez, Ph.D.
