Kelly Henwood Presents at the Adult Education Basic Grant Summit

by Kay Faulconer Boger, Ed.D., Interim Vice President of Instruction

Special Projects Director Kelly Henwood was a featured presenter at the recent Adult Education Basic Grant Summit in Universal City. Ms. Henwood participated in two panel discussions. In the first panel,  Adult Education/Noncredit: Critical Resource for Formerly Incarcerated Students, she focused on the San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE) partnership with Second Chance and bringing our HSE/ABE course to their community site as a social justice partnership that bridges their workforce housing, and mental health supports with SDCE educational services. These students are now coming on regular tours of ECC Campus via our Outreach Department and enrolling in our CTE Skilled Trades courses. She also touched on the critical role of having faculty that are passionate about supporting this population of adult learners.

The second panel, Opportunity Youth: Strategies to Support Vulnerable Young Adults, featured Kelly and Mia Funk, Director of Reconnections from San Diego Unified School District. Kelly focused on the San Diego Gateway to College and Career, bridging funding including Local Workforce Board partnerships and the changing dynamics and funding of Adult Education that provide resources for this young adult learner. In addition, the importance of work supports and case management to support persistence and other services that typically are not provided in higher discussion were highlighted. Kelly mentioned the great work faculty have done with embracing and adopting ACE/FELI as well as the importance of using regional data to frame the need such as “Flip the Script.”
