Recently, Governor Jerry Brown invited Chancellor Eloy Oakley to provide suggestions for alternative educational pathways for working adult learners in alignment with the Vision for Success document, which was adopted by the Board of Governors.
Fortunately for adult students in San Diego, San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE) has been selected to participate in a work group commissioned by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) at the behest of Chancellor Oakley to help inform suggested alternatives to help adult learners succeed. Specifically, SDCE President Carlos O. Turner Cortez, Ph.D., will participate in four planning meetings to strategize how the state system can best support the academic and career success of nontraditional adult students. Options that will target ‘adults with some college and no certification’ as well as ‘working adults with vocational needs’ will be created to enable these students to earn certifications that lead better workforce outcomes.
To meet the November deadline established by the Governor, CCCCCO engaged the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (NCHEMS) to create a workgroup specifically focused on this important strategy. CCCCO refers to this project as the Flex Learning Options for Workers (FLOW), and meetings will begin this fall.
