March 23, 2016, San Diego Continuing Education held a wonderful celebration at the Chavez Campus Car Park in Barrio Logan. We celebrated community, collaboration and commitment to legacy as we joined with leaders from San Diego, friends and family of the late Cesar Chavez, and young Chavistas from Burbank Elementary—our future community leaders—to honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers’ Movement.
The car park is not only a parking structure, it is a culturally significant tribute to Chavez’ life and the ten values he lived by, which are inscribed throughout the impressive photographic murals on the sides of the building.
An entire team of SDCE and SDCCD faculty, staff and administrators planned this event with leadership and coordination from our neighbors in Barrio Logan, including Barrio Station and Cesar Chavez Service Clubs. Our event not only dedicated the car park structure, but celebrated the important work we do together, as neighbors, to build a strong community.
