Spring 2018 SDCE Diversity Book Club

There was another full house at the Spring 2018 SDCE Diversity Book Club, held at North City Center on March 5 where we welcomed participants. We are excited to have extended the SDCE Diversity Book Club to a broader and more diverse audience which this semester will include a total of 35+ faculty, classified professional staff and administrative staff.  Faculty from ABE/ ASE, BIT, Counseling, DSPS, ESL, HCS Fashion and Parent Ed/Child Development attended, as well as staff from Mid City, Cesar Chavez and  North City Centers.  An  SDCE Diversity Committee community member has also joined us.  The SDCE Diversity Book Club is an opportunity to read, learn, share ideas and build community at SDCE.

The book chosen is  Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family by Amy Ellis-Nutt.  This is the  inspiring true story of a transgender girl, her identical twin brother, and an ordinary American family’s extraordinary journey to understand, nurture, and celebrate the uniqueness in us all, from the Pulitzer Prize–winning science reporter for The Washington Post. For more information about this book, go to Becoming Nicole.

Laurel Slater, ESL Faculty/Miramar Chair, led the first meeting where books were distributed and we enthusiastically discussed some issues and ideas related to the book to think about while we are reading. Our second meeting will be in April.

We hope this will be the first of many years to come for the SDCE Diversity Book Club.  Special thanks to the SDCE Diversity Committee Chair/Parent Ed Faculty Linda Osborn; Laurel Slater, ESL Faculty/Miramar Chair and Sol Madrid, ECC Bookstore Manager for support.
