New instructors in the Business and Information Technology Program
Steven Major
Steven Major has 30 years of engineering, technology management and training experience holding both technical and training positions including System Engineer, Technical Support Engineer, Project Manager, Manager of Technical Services and Technical Support Director. Mr. Major has an A.A. degree in Electronic Engineering technology from the Pennsylvania Institute of Technology, and is a Cisco Certified Network Associate as well as a certificated Cisco Instructor.
Emily Kay
Emily Kay has been actively developing and designing websites since the early 1990s. Emily earned her B.A. degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Arizona and upon graduating she worked for several design firms throughout San Diego. Emily is passionate about sharing her knowledge with others and has found teaching to be an excellent outlet. She has worked for SDCCD for the past 16 years and before that taught at Platt College and Mira Costa College.
New instructors in the ESL Program
Maria Allan
Maria Allan has been teaching in SDCE’s ESL program since 2014 and has also taught at Miramar College, Cal State San Marcos and USD. Maria has been the CATESOL Assistant IEP Level Chair and is currently the Chair of the Budget Subcommittee for CATESOL. Maria has used hybrid technology in the classroom such as Blackboard and Moodle and actively participates in the SDCE Learner Persistence and Technology Committees. Ms. Allan earned her M.A. in Linguistics from SDSU with an emphasis in Applied Linguistics/TESL, and a B.S. in Horticulture from the University of Strathelyde, Glasgow, UK. She also has a reading instruction Certificate from UCSD and an Advanced ESL Certificate from SDSU.
Monica Cueva
Ms. Cueva has been teaching ESL at San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) in Walnut, California since 2013. Prior to this she taught ESL at Saddleback Community College in Mission Viejo. She has taught all levels of ESL, has curriculum design experience and was also an ESL faculty tutoring and ESL workshop coordinator. She recently initiated the ESL tutoring Program at Mt. SACS’s Language Learning Center. Ms. Cueva is currently the Community College Level Chair of CATESOL in the Southern California section. She earned her M.S. in Education with a TESOL Emphasis from Cal State in Fullerton, CA and a B.A. in Spanish, Multicultural and Gender Studies.
Karen Hamilton
Ms. Hamilton has been teaching at Glendale Community College since 2013 as a full-time Vocational ESL Faculty member. Prior to this she taught at Palomar College as an ESL instructor in academic and vocational settings to multi-level, credit and non-credit community college students. Ms. Hamilton has 15 years of teaching experience in various settings. Additionally, she has worked as a content writer and editor for Oxford University Press. She earned her M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, and her B.A. of Arts with Honors in Language and Identity from the Pitzer College in Claremont.
Laurel Slater
Laurel Slater has been teaching in SDCE’s ESL program since 2007 as an adjunct instructor. She has served as an ESL Assistant Program Chair and has written and implemented curriculum, and assessed/evaluated student progress. Laurel has mentored and trained instructors on the use of CASAS assessments and using rubrics for the ESL SLO Writing Process, and she has trained teachers on how to do student orientation and has trained instructors to do ESL APC activities at the SDCE Miramar ESL Program. Ms. Slater has earned a M.A. in Applied Linguistics from SDSU and a B.A. in Linguistics and Social Science with a Minor in Spanish.
Stephanie Thomas
Ms. Thomas has been teaching in SDCE’s ESL program since 2005 and prior to this she taught ESL for 14 years for the San Diego Unified and Escondido Union High School Districts. She also serves as the El Civics Assistant Coordinator as SDCE and assists in writing curriculum. Ms. Thomas mentors and trains teachers on technology use and classroom integration. She earned her M.A. in Education with a minor in Integrating Technology from Walden University in Minneapolis, and an B.S. in Political Science from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. She also has a BCLAD (Bilingual Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development) and LDS (Language Development Specialist Certificate) certifications.
Richard Weinroth
Mr. Weinroth has been teaching in SDCE’s ESL Program since 1981. He has taught various levels of ESL along with curriculum development, multi-level instructional planning and student language competency assessment and evaluation in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Mr. Weinroth was an Acting ESL Assistant Program Chair in 2015 and currently serves SDCE’s Academic Senate as President. Richard is pursuing the Community College Leadership Ed.D. Program at San Diego State University, where he earned his M.A. in Education. He also has a B.S. in Design from Buffalo State University, NY, and various credentials with the California Community Colleges in the areas of basic skills, ESL, English, GED preparation, arithmetic, science and reading.
