from the office of Dr. King
January 16, 2024

Dear SDCCE Community,

Thank you to all who attended the 42nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade this past Sunday. My family and I enjoyed marching alongside you in honoring the long-standing legacy of Dr. King. Myself and the family of Rossie Wade were truly in awe of our college's competition float entry, which eloquently showcased a Rossie Wade replica piece "the Black Family Sculpture" and Mr. Wade's life’s story. I would like to give a special thank you and congratulations to SDCCE's welding department, Mike Bradbury, and our student welders for your creativity and dedication each year to the MLK Parade. Stay tuned for photos!

SDCCE's MLK Parade Float Entry was featured in the Times of San Diego and the establishment of MLK Day as a federal holiday is highlighted in Voice and Viewpoint, which occurred following Coretta Scott King's address at the Educational Cultural Complex.

Our SDCCE team and SDCCD Chancellor Smith had the honor of attending and sponsoring the Jackie Robinson YMCA's 39th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Dignity Award Breakfast at the San Diego Convention Center on January 12th.

We also attended the Alliance San Diego's 36th "All Peoples Celebration" at Balboa Park, a wonderful tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Last Friday, a graduate from our High School Diploma/Equivalency program sent me a very kind note on behalf of SDCCE counselor Sany Ramirez. Please take a moment to read:

“Ms. Ramirez has been instrumental in creating a conducive learning environment, offering valuable insights, and tailoring educational strategies to suit my individual needs. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that students like me are equipped with the necessary resources and encouragement to succeed. I firmly believe that Ms. Ramirez is an asset to your educational institution, embodying qualities of dedication, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to student success. Her influence has undoubtedly contributed to my academic achievements, and I am grateful for the positive impact she has had on my educational journey.”

As we start the new spring semester, may this serve as a reminder of why we do what we do. We are truly transforming lives! Thank you Sany and all SDCCE members who go above and beyond to create generational change for students like this one.
