from the office of Dr. King
January 24, 2023

Dear SDCCE Community,

I am thrilled to announce San Diego College of Continuing Education received First Place in the float division for our entry “Dream to Learn, Learn to Love, Live the Dream” for this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. I would like to extend a huge congratulations to our amazing college, student welders and the entire welding department! Thank you to everyone who marched alongside SDCCE during the MLK parade. Our 2023 float entry and past float entries will be memorialized at SDCCE’s Educational Cultural Complex (ECC)! View photo album 1 and view photo album 2.

A very special thank you to SDCCE's welding faculty, Mike Bradbury, Byron Cowart, and Brad Dorschel and to our students who truly did this beautiful work to make our award-winning MLK float. SDCCE student welder, Keyera Ballard, shared designing the float was one of her biggest accomplishments to be a part of. Watch the full clip here on Fox 5 News.

Many historic American Civil Rights events have ties to ECC, including the California Commission to establish Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a federal holiday and performances by Civil Rights leader Coretta Scott King, award-winning artist and humanitarian Stevie Wonder, and Civil Rights activist and American poet Maya Angelou.

Correta Scott King kissing Martin Luther King, JrThe dream of Mr. and Mrs. King continues to be remembered in San Diego with the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, the largest celebration of its kind in the United States. Dr. Robert Matthews, civil rights activist and longtime educator came to SDCCE as an administrator in the 70s and became involved in the parade, organized by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity since its establishment in San Diego in 1980. Matthews and Dr. King are members of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Students and faculty in SDCCE’s welding department design a float each year to echo Dr. King's dream for liberty and freedom. Congratulations again SDCCE and please save the date for our annual Coretta Scott King benefit brunch at ECC on June 10th at 11:30 a.m. to honor our college's special legacy.

Best,
