SDCCE Celebrates Black History Month

February marks the start of Black History Month! Please join me at the following events below as we celebrate Black and African American historical events and the rich contributions of our Black and African American students, employees, community members, and the trailblazers and ancestors who paved the way before us.

I am also honored to announce I have been named among the Top 50 Black Leaders of Influence in 2023 by the San Diego Business Journal and am among the Top 25 Outstanding Women featured in Diverse: Issues In Higher Education for Women's History Month. It is a joy to represent our college in such a profound way.

Enrollment Updates

SDCCE’s overall enrollment for spring stands at 20,666 (20% greater than this time last year, and a 14% increase from last week), with a fill rate of 76%, which is greater than last spring (74%). SDCCE’s overall headcount is currently 12,190, an increase of 32% compared to this time last spring (9,235) and a 15% increase to last week (10,587). FTEF scheduled for the spring semester are 11% higher than last spring (180.83 to 162.18).

Campus Ready

Campus Updates

  • Congratulations Dr. Coskey! SDCCD has named Laurie Coskey Vice Chancellor of Development and Entrepreneurship. Read more here.
  • We have a new consultant supporting in the Interim Public Information Officer role, David Ogul, effective February 6th. David will help the college continue to advance with our marketing and branding efforts as we hire our permanent PIO position. Welcome, David Ogul!
  • Welcome Week activities hosted by SDCCE Cares & SDCCE Outreach continue through February 9. All students are invited to participate in a virtual scavenger hunt by posting photos from the various welcome week activities with the hashtag #ExploreSDCCE. View event details here and photos here.
  • SDCCE’s Administrative Services presented the ECC Theatre pre-design report to the faculty at our spring Institution Day on January 30.
  • SDCCE’s CalWORKs office is hosting a “Know Your Rights Workshop” February 14th -16th in collaboration with the Haitian Bridge Alliance.
  • SDCCE is collaborating with Mesa College for a SDCCE/Mesa Day, which will be hosted at Mesa College on Wednesday March 15th from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • SDCCE students will have an opportunity to learn more about Mesa College’s degree programs, classes, and Student Services.
  • I hosted the Cal Coast Tour at SDCCE’s Mid-City campus to explore Financial Education opportunities for our students. Thank you, Dean Jan Jarrell for your support with the tour and partnership meeting.
  • :::: HUGE:::: SDCCE is collaborating with District IT to establish a vanity number (619) 388-SDCE that is easy to remember and will streamline communication to our campuses and access to information for current and prospective students.
  • VP Sabanos attended the 2023 ACCCA/ACBO Budget Workshop on January 18, 2023.
  • The SDCCE Foundation and Scholarship team worked together to identify how many dollars are available for student scholarships at the Stars on the Rise Event on April 21st. Due to our Stars on the Rise Scholarship Giving Campaign in December and to new scholarship donors this year SDCCE will be giving out 35 new scholarships and adding more than $15,000 in new scholarships for students.
  • SDCCE’s Clothing and Textiles department welcomed guest artist, Deborah Kruger, on January 31st as the keynote speaker at SDCCE’s BIG MAKE Capstone Event and student exhibit at ECC. View photos here.
  • The SDCCE has launched SDCCE CARES, a comprehensive basic needs program designed to help students meet fundamental needs of food, housing, transportation, childcare, health care, and mental wellness. Students are connected to dignified, accessible, and timely resources that will allow them to live well and thrive while completing their educational goals.

The Research Corner

The Office of Planning, Research, and Institutional Effectiveness (PRIE) will use this space to share research and planning resources developed internally or by our districtwide and regional partners. This week, we encourage you to review the latest iteration of the SDCCE Student and Community Profile (2016/17 – 2021/22). This report is released annually to support multiple initiatives, including Program Review, Strategic Planning, and Accreditation. The profile includes data from our students, the institution, and the community. Take a minute to review this resource and email jrivas@sdccd.edu if you have any questions.
