from the office of Dr. King
March 25, 2024

Dear SDCCE Community,

I am pleased to announce on Saturday, March 23rd, San Diego College of Continuing Education raised a record-breaking $30,234 at the 2024 surviveHEADSTRONG Walk and Health Fair, a fundraiser hosted by the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation. Our college body joined together under the name, “Team ABI” at Mission Bay’s DeAnza Cove. Newly-retired Professor Heike Kessler-Heiberg formed Team Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) to partake in the event 16 years ago, and Team ABI has become a top donor, raising more than $300,000 since 2008.

We honored Heike during the March 23rd walk with a plaque in front of her students, colleagues, friends, and family in gratitude of her 35 years of service to our college and philanthropic efforts for Team ABI!

The $30,234 raised at the surviveHEADSTRONG Walk will benefit the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation with $6,046.80 of donations going towards the College of Continuing Education’s ABI trust fund for scholarships. With the support of the President's Office, Outreach, DSPS, ABI, and the Communications and Creative Services Team, for the first-time Team ABI was represented with expanded outreach to further extend visibility to the community and inaugural scholarships were awarded to students in need to participate in the walk.

We will sincerely miss Professor Kessler-Heiberg and we will continue to collaborate with her and Team ABI. The partnership between SDCCE and the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation has a rich history. Upon meeting with Chief Operating Officer for the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation Stephanie Bidegain and Executive Director Dr. Roslyn Knox, I am certain that we will keep the legacy strong. The future is bright for our Acquired Brain Injury program.

As you all know we were among the institutions impacted the largest following the January 22nd rainfall, please know we are doing everything we can to resume normal operations at San Diego College of Continuing Education. We appreciate your flexibility from all the displaced services/programs, employees working in temporary spaces, and of course our faculty and students adapting to remote modalities.

Below is a comprehensive list of updates for our beloved Cesar Chavez Campus and the Educational Cultural Complex. Back in January we were told 6-8 weeks for restoration, however we are still a long way from returning to normal business operations. The most recent target period of completion is toward the end of May or end of June.

As we see progress at both Chavez and ECC, we will continue to provide updates as we receive them. In the meantime, here are some big wins:

  • ECC C Bldg.-Prep and drywall installation started 2/18. Drywall in all classrooms on North side of the hallway should be hung by close of business 3/21. Drywall starts in classroom, offices and Repro on 3/22, and should be completely hung 3/25-3/26. Drywall taping (mud) should start 3/26 and be completed 4/9.
  • ECC A-Bldg.-Drywall installation to start week of 3/25 and should take one day. Drywall mud to start next day.
  • ECC Main-Abatement of flooring mastic in 107, 113-117, 121 Conf to begin week of 4/1. May start sooner depending on APCD permit? Drywall to start as soon as asbestos clearance (from pulling flooring/mastic) is received.
  • Cesar E CFhavez-24 Hour Elevator on site 3/19. Both elevators up and running now.
  • Cesar E Chavez-Carpet quotes are being reviewed.

A huge thank you to VP Jacqueline Sabanos, our College Facilities and Operations Director Anthony Vargas, and SDCCD Assistant Facilities Services Director Charlie Williams for leading us in these critical restoration efforts!
