April 1, 2024

Dear SDCCE Community,

We are excited to welcome students and faculty back from a well-deserved spring break! I hope it was a time of rest and reflection as we get ready to celebrate our students with scholarship awards, Black Student Success Week, commencement, and so much more!

I am elated to announce San Diego College of Continuing Education will award a generous $87,475 in scholarships and awards to 188 SDCCE career and college bound students during our annual Scholarship and Award Celebration on Friday April 26th from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Educational Cultural Complex. This groundbreaking for our college, as this is the largest amount of funds we have raised in scholarships. . For the first time in our college's history, we will be holding a banquet style celebration, where scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to engage with our esteemed donors. The gift of higher education and workforce training is invaluable. Thank you to our SDCCE Foundation, our donors, and all who contributed to make this possible. Thank you, Dr. Tami Foy, Dean Michele Madrid Novak, and Classified Senate President Neill Kovrig for leading this important celebratory milestone for our students!

Reminder, as spring semester continues to be strong and as we get ready for the upcoming summer session, be sure to review SDCCE's Registration Calendar Spring 2024 – Summer 2025. The 2024 summer schedule will go live April 15th and summer enrollment opens May 13th for students.

Enrollment Updates

SDCCE’s overall enrollment for spring stands at 29,926 (4% greater than this time last year, and a 0.5% increase from last week). SDCCE’s overall headcount is currently 15,793, an increase of 6% compared to this time last spring (14,958) and a 0.3% increase compared to the previous week (15,749). SDCCE proudly celebrates April as Arab American Heritage Month. This heritage month, we recognize the rich contributions from our employees, students, and community members with roots from Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Iraq, and Libya, to name a few Arab nations. Many of whom are or come from hard-working immigrant and refugee families and are woven into the history of American culture. #AllAreWelcome

As we return from spring break, please remember some of our students will still be fasting for Ramadan. Ramadan in 2024 will be from approximately, March 10th - April 9th. Ramadan is the month of fasting for our Muslim community. Practicing Muslim students will be fasting from dawn until dusk (approximately from 4:30 a.m. to 7:55 p.m.). Fasting means no food, and no water.. Ramadan celebrations often involve gatherings and prayers into the night. It’s not unusual to be up past midnight for prayers and then get up at 3:30-4:00 a.m. to eat before dawn. Students may ask for permission to leave class to pray for 10 minutes or break their fast. Thank you, Dr. Judy Sundayo for this important and inclusive acknowledgement of our students.

Historical Preservation Committee

On Wednesday, March 27th, our Historical Preservation Committee came together to discuss key updates within SDCCE and to celebrate our new book, The Place of Vision: Drum Call to Destiny, A History of the Educational Cultural Complex by Alyce Smith Cooper. This book is a love letter to our beloved ECC and we could not be more excited to celebrate! A special thank you to all of the historical preservation committee members who helped bring this book to fruition. Info on how to obtain a copy of the book is coming soon. View photos here.
