Dear SDCCE Community,

I am thrilled to share that my trip to Sacramento, CA with Dr. Carter and SDCCE alum Carlos Morales was incredibly rewarding! Together, we advocated for Assembly Bill 1433, fighting to ensure that noncredit students receive the support and resources they need to succeed—especially in areas like disability services, mental health, basic needs, and veterans services. I’m excited to announce that the bill passed the Assembly Higher Education Committee with an 8-0 vote!

This marks a significant step toward positive change, and I look forward to continuing the push for reforms that will have a lasting impact on our student community. Our next goal is to move the bill forward to the Veterans Affairs Committee on April 22nd.

Thank you to Assemblymember Sharp-Collins for all of her support in authoring the bill and to the committee for recognizing the value of noncredit education and workforce development!

Watch our testimony as we champion Assembly Bill 1433, which passed the Assembly Higher Education Committee, ensuring vital support for noncredit students!

Today at 10:08 a.m. this morning, a 5.2 earthquake occurred three miles south of the town of Julian, about 50 miles east of San Diego that was felt by many of us. Please take a moment to reassure students after today’s earthquake—many may be feeling anxious or unsettled. Let them know they are safe, campus is open, and their well-being truly matters.

Encourage them to talk with an instructor, counselor, or staff member, or reach out to for mental health support.

If you notice any damage or safety concerns, please contact Facilities at 619-388-4846 right away.

President's Updates

President King receiving an award' President King receiving an award

I am deeply honored to have attended The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) conference in Nashville, Tennessee and the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) Breakfast where I received the 2025 Mildred Bulpitt Woman of the Year Award for leadership and mentorship for women in community colleges. This recognition truly resonates with the values and goals of SDCCE, where we are committed to empowering individuals, fostering inclusivity, and promoting lifelong learning. I’m grateful for the support and opportunity to be part of such a transformative community!

I hosted the Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging Task Force Meeting last Wednesday, where we welcomed Amanda Simons from our ESL department to the Taskforce. We also focused on actionable steps to enhance support for our students in the current social climate. Among the key initiatives we’re working on are updating and expanding our FAQ section, gathering information on upcoming events and important dates, and collaborating across campus departments to ensure we're providing the necessary support. I encourage you to visit the webpage for the latest updates. A big thank you to the Task Force for another productive and impactful meeting!

The Research Corner

This week, we invite you to explore the report Equity and Mental Health in California Community Colleges: Data from Healthy Minds Survey. A report on mental health of community college students, how easy it is and how likely are students to get the help they need, and the attitudes and perceptions students have towards mental health assistance. Focusing on the variation of such metrics dependent upon whether someone is BIPOC, LGBTQIA, disabled, or first-generation, and if mental health treatment provided by community colleges is equitable. You can read the full article at the following link: Equity and Mental Health in California Community Colleges. Please take a minute to review this resource and email if you have any questions.
