Dear SDCCE Community,
I'm excited to share some great news from Sacramento! Last Thursday, I delivered a testimony before the Assembly Military & Veterans Affairs Committee in strong support of AB 1433, championed by Assemblymember Dr. LaShae Sharp-Collins—and it passed unanimously (8–0)!
I was joined by veteran welding student Kevin Sullivan, whose testimony added a compelling voice to the cause. I’m also deeply thankful to our incredible SDCCE colleagues who came out to show their support: Dr. Shakerra Carter, Juan Serrano, Aimee Serrano, Mitza Lindsey, Belle Ayala, Lavette Arciga, Yasmine Mena, Franklin Garrett, and Nida Pierre.
Moments like this remind us of the power of collective advocacy. Thank you all for the continued work you do to uplift and empower our Noncredit students.

Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging (SIB) Task Force Updates
At San Diego College of Continuing Education, we are committed to maintaining a campus environment that fosters inclusivity, equity, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their background or immigration status. The SIB Task Force was created to develop actionable steps to enhance support for our students in the current social climate. As a Task Force we are working on the current initiatives:
- We’re Here to Stay Program – A new effort focused on supporting students facing immigration-related challenges.
- Immigration Resources – Centralized access to information and tools addressing a wide range of immigration needs.
- Informational Events – A series of sessions hosted by SIB sub-committees to help students navigate immigration systems.
- Campus-Wide Resource List – A comprehensive guide to services, including asylum, parole, and legal support.
- Legal Consultations – One-on-one legal guidance, with $150 provided for the first session and discounted rates for ongoing representation.
I look forward to the important conversations ahead and to taking the next steps together toward achieving these goals and ensuring all our students feel supported, empowered, and valued.
I enjoyed the Coffee & Chat Q&A at the West City Campus and look forward to our next session on May 9 at the North City Campus, 9 to 10 a.m., MPR 101. These coffee and chats will be platforms to continue conversations on budget, enrollment, staffing, and unique campus needs.

President's Updates

Last week, I had the privilege of visiting Professor Boswell's ESL class at our Mid-City Campus. It was inspiring to engage with students who are working hard to build their language skills, pursue new opportunities, and strengthen their connection to our community. Their dedication is a powerful reminder of the impact education has in transforming lives.
Last Thursday, I had the privilege of welcoming Kern Community College District Vice Chancellors Norma Rojas and Stacy Pfluger to SDCCE. The visit offered meaningful opportunities for them to learn more about our innovative approaches and to exchange ideas around student success and workforce development.

An article on community college baccalaureate programs, including their effectiveness, the demographics of the students that participate, and the degrees conferred. It discusses how CCB programs differ from 4-year university baccalaureate programs, and how well CCB programs contribute to equitable access to bachelor's degrees. You can read the full article at the following link: Community College Baccalaureate Programs as an Equity Strategy: Student Access and Outcomes Data .
