Dear SDCCE Community,

Juneteenth Flag-raising group

Juneteenth is not just another federal holiday; it is a true celebration of freedom remembering the date of June 19, 1865 – more than two months after the end of the Civil War – when the Union Army arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and announced an executive order proclaiming the liberation of an estimated 250,000 enslaved African Americans. We are honored to keep this legacy alive, and we invite the community to celebrate with us.

Thank you to all who were able to join us during the historic Juneteenth flag-raising ceremony at the Educational Cultural Complex on June 15. To continue the important recognition, today we hosted a beautiful Juneteenth event, Celebration of Freedom, which included music, a drum call, storytelling, poetry, food, and more at the Educational Cultural Complex. The program was made possible by a grant from the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and the SDCCE Foundation.
