Dear SDCCE,
Firstly, may I share that I could not be more excited and honored to begin work as SDCCE's next President. I have sincere gratitude to the Board of Trustees and Chancellor Cortez who have trusted me with this opportunity.
I have dedicated my 20-year career in education to social justice and to serving students. My work in public education and specifically in noncredit adult instruction has been intentional. I understand first-hand how noncredit changes lives and the trajectory of the students SDCCE serves as I, myself, am a proud Afro-Latina woman from an immigrant family, and I, myself, am a direct product of noncredit.
As president, I will be encouraged and inspired every day to know that my own lived experiences are similar to SDCCE students' lived experiences. I am personally committed to continuing the legacy of this great organization, and to adult education. On my word, you can count on me to professionally and sincerely represent this incredible college with only the best intentions.
Since being named the next president, I've had the opportunity to attend several events, partnership meetings, and our beautiful commencement ceremony. This past week, I joined Chancellor Cortez in a tour around the ECC campus to understand ECC's history and legacy in the community and city of San Diego. I could not be more proud to join SDCCE!
As I begin my position, it is my top priority to meet as many of you as possible in the coming weeks. I look forward to touring campuses and being in touch both via e-mail and also with video updates (stay tuned!). You can also find me on Twitter @DrKingTina and on Instagram @sdccepresident.
Have a wonderful Fourth of July weekend as I am sure many of you will be celebrating with friends and family and enjoying our beautiful city. As I have been learning more about SDCCE and the students, I have watched several wonderful videos and this one about SDCCE's Citizenship Program was one of my favorites, and certainly, one that is relevant as we celebrate this weekend.
Best,
