Dear San Diego College of Continuing Education,

I hope that you all are enjoying your summer. We are coming through uncertain times, recognizing that the past two years have posed many challenges for all of us. With this, we are excited for another successful academic year as we lead forward, stronger and bolder! Thank you all for your commitment to SDCCE, to our students, and community.

Yesterday, Gregory Smith, SDCCD’s Vice Chancellor of Human Resources, shared communication about remote work opportunities and changes from our summer session operations. This message is to provide clarity on how the Executive President’s Cabinet will address remote work requests as SDCCE transitions from summer programming into the fall semester.

As you know, initial remote work requests were approved through August 15, 2022, meaning employees wishing to continue with a remote work schedule beyond August 15, 2022, must submit a new request. The below is intended to provide guidance to employees who intend to submit a new request for remote work:

  • Current remote work approvals will expire the week of August 15, 2022.
  • Remote assignments should not be requested for the time period of August 15, 2022, through September 23, 2022. This is a period when "all hands on deck" are needed to support fall enrollment and to provide the best service to students.
  • A maximum of one (1) remote workday per week may be requested.
  • Ad hoc and fixed remote work requests will be considered for the period of September 23, 2022, through December 31, 2022. Please note, that a student-centered schedule has been, and will continue to be developed for the fall semester. The administration has the right of assignment to create a student-centered schedule. Please recall that District policy does not allow any remote work requests to be approved beyond one year.
  • All NANC employees will be scheduled either remotely or on campus by their supervisor, based on the operational needs of the campus.
  • Eligible employees must:
    • Not have excess vacation balances;
    • Not have an unpaid financial liability to the District;
    • Not be on a formal performance improvement plan; and
    • Work primarily within the state of California.
  • This period of remote work will continue the “pilot” period to evaluate whether or not remote work flexibility provides optimum service to students and meets the college’s needs. A review of the effectiveness of remote work continues and will remain ongoing.
  • In November 2022, SDCCE will assess the need for remote work during spring 2023.
  • All EPC members, administrators, and College Operations Supervisor positions will operate on an ad hoc schedule based on the approval of their direct supervisor for the duration of the semester, not on a fixed 4/1 schedule. The intent is to mitigate operating deficiencies.
  • Any remote work request that is approved is subject to being rescinded if the supervisor or administration at any time determines a need for the employee to work fully on campus.

SDCCE is committed to a comprehensive student support model focused on meeting the full needs of every student. Just as we came together during the pandemic to serve our students by quickly transitioning to online teaching, learning, and virtual services, we must now also be agile enough to transition back to campus for students who need in-person support. While we have seen a migration toward fully and partially online classes and online services, we know that not all students have been able to make the transition. As we review SDCCE's remote work opportunities, our equal priority is a focus on campus safety, enrollment strategies, and student services.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Adelante!
