Dear SDCCE Community,

Wednesday, August 28th, marks our college's very special fall convocation where we will celebrate, 110 years of greatness, at the Educational Cultural Complex from 9 a.m. to noon. Please join me, our chancellor, board of trustees, vice presidents, and esteemed guests as we reflect on our history as the leading noncredit institution in the state and where we are headed as a national leader in workforce education.

Please RSVP by August 19, 2024.

Additionally, I encourage you take a look back at our prosperous history featured on our newly launched 110 years of greatness web page . In honor of our anniversary, you and your students are invited to share how SDCCE has impacted your life on our virtual memory wall. There are also several assets available to download including a new PowerPoint template, Zoom background, and 110-year logo to add to your email signature.

Thank you for sharing in our legacy, I look forward to our in-person celebration together on August 28th!

outreach boothFrom last week and continuing into this week, thank you to those who are participating in the Campus Community Emergency Response Team (C-CERT) training hosted at the Educational Cultural Complex. This training program prepares us to respond to emergencies on campus while emphasizing personal safety and preparedness techniques that can be used at home, work, or on campus. Trainees receive hands-on training with fire extinguishers, Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), cribbing, and medical triage. Thank you for your commitment to safety!

I am proud to announce that Juan Serrano, faculty and CalWORKs Chair, has been elected as the next Region X CalWORKs representative on the California Community Colleges CalWORKs Association Board. This marks a historic achievement for SDCCE as we become the first noncredit institution to serve in this leadership capacity. Juan will attend the Region X On-Boarding/Retreat with the other Regional representatives in San Francisco this September. His dedication and leadership will undoubtedly significantly impact the future of our organization and the CalWORKs community.

Congratulations, Juan !

A reminder that all SDCCE campuses are closed on Fridays for the summer due to the 4/10 schedule. Campuses will resume a normal Monday to Friday schedule starting next week, August 19.

SDCCE has established a Cultural Events Committee, which will be responsible for organizing and executing cultural events throughout the academic year, excluding summers. This initiative will be in partnership with the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Committee, as well as the SDCCE Affinity Programs. Thank you to this committee for all of you will do for our college!

If you have a passion for promoting cultural awareness and inclusivity, we would love to have you join us. To apply to be a part of the Cultural Events Committee, please visit the Link to Application. The deadline to apply is August 22nd.

outreach boothThank you to everyone who joined us last month for the 2024 Fall Enroll Fest! I am excited to share that we served over 570 new and returning CE students, with over 60% receiving enrollment support. Looking ahead, our Outreach team is working to find ways to increase our reach and meet the needs of the community we serve and would love your feedback! Please take a few minutes to complete this feedback form and share your ideas on how to elevate future enrollment events .

With the summer semester winding down and the start of the fall semester just around the corner, here are some great Canvas and Zoom tips for our faculty from Dr. Ingrid Greenberg!

Single Sign On (SSO) for Canvas

On July 15, 2024, SDCCD launched Single Sign On for Canvas. Students now must use their student email and password instead of their student ID number to sign into Canvas.

Canvas Tips

If you have been teaching a summer semester, here are some Canvas tips and reminders:

  • To ensure that you have a copy of your Canvas course for future use, you might want to export a copy of your Canvas course. For more information, watch this video tutorial from Monica Cueva: End-of-Semester Canvas Reminders (7:00)
  • Remind students of end-of-semester and new semester activities with Canvas Inbox Messages and/or Canvas Announcements. You can send final Canvas Inbox messages to students to give them final feedback, next steps for future semesters, or information about which courses follow yours in the sequence if applicable.
  • Some students also like to receive Canvas Announcements. If you are new to using "announcements" in Canvas, here is a tutorial: How do I add an announcement in a course?

SDCCD Online Faculty Certification Program (OFCP)

Good news! The SDCCD OFCP has been recently updated with content and a new design! The new training has two parts (Teaching with Canvas and Introduction to Online Instruction) and has cohorts with start dates that occur monthly. If you would like to schedule online faculty mentoring to complete the OFCP, please email Anagit Traganza, Online Faculty Mentor Facilitator at .

President's Updates

I enjoyed attending the first Summer Youth Camp Showcase offered by the Harvey Family Foundation. This was the culmination of a FREE 5 week summer program for up to 50 children that included immersive curriculum taught by amazing instructors, meals, health and wellness, and weekly field trips. This partnership between SDCCE, the Harvey Family Foundation and the Jackie Robinson YMCA was a huge success. The best part, the summer program offered back to school gear for the students for their hard work all summer!

I alongside the SDCCE Foundation and SDCCD colleagues had a wonderful time attending the 2024 Labor Council Dinner LaborPalooza hosted by the San Diego Labor Council. Our SDCCE Hospitality Program partnership was highlighted at the event for transforming lives one certificate at a time and for supporting students with job placement.
