SDCCE's Fall 2022 Convocation. Centering Culture and Community to Strengthen our Tapestry. The Future is Bright

Dear SDCCE Community,

This week I had the pleasure of meeting several students from the healthcare careers program at Cesar Chavez Campus. It's very inspiring to hear the amazing experiences of these students who are at different stages of their educational journeys. I left the visit feeling very proud to be leading this wonderful organization with so many dedicated faculty and enthusiastic students! I also had the honor and pleasure of recently meeting Ms. Julia Kogan, SDCCE's first student trustee. Hear more about our visit in this week's video clip.

I have more good news to share about enrollment. As enrollment management efforts continue, SDCCE's fill rate has increased 9% in the last week. Enrollment started for fall 2022 on June 27 rather than July 25, as in 2021. The early registration and enrollment efforts have proven to be positive. In addition, the total number of hybrid/hyflex and on-campuses classes represents 34% of total class offerings, which is a significant increase over last fall. Thank you for your focus and commitment to enrollment management.

SDCCE has a new partnership with the United States Postal Service (USPS) to expand employment opportunities for students in the automotive career training program. Members of the USPS team visited the Educational Cultural Complex (ECC) last week to tour the automotive program classrooms, lab spaces, and to meet the students and faculty members. Representatives from SDCCE, San Diego City College, and the District attended a community of practice session for the NCAL (Noncredit to Credit Alignment Lab) Initiative in Washington D.C. this week. SDCCE’s healthcare career program for nursing assistant was approved, unconditionally, for the next two years due to the hard work of Carrie Lewis, the program's new clinical director.

English as a Second Language Assessment and Placement Offices re-opened this week with expanded hours for students. The requirement for having an advance appointment was also removed to support increased access. The San Diego Workforce Partnership has committed additional funds to student success for the Apprenticeship Readiness Programs. Funding that originated at Illumina and flowed through the State Chancellor’s office has been dedicated to $84,000 for student support such as childcare or housing assistance, and $57,000 for math tutoring for the trades. These funds are restricted to students in the Apprenticeship Readiness Program and must be expended by May 31, 2023.

Also this week, SDG&E presented a check for $1,200,000+ for six cohorts of the Utility Line Clearance Arborist Training. The program will be teaching two courses per year for the next three years. This is great news for our college and for the students who benefit from this workforce training leading to good-paying jobs.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at convocation on August 31, 2022, at ECC. As a reminder, SDCCE campuses will be closed on August 31 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. so that our faculty, classified professionals, and administrators have the opportunity to attend the first day of convocation and experience the camaraderie, positive energy, and important professional development sessions. All attendees will receive a symbolic-themed t-shirt so please remember to RSVP!

Please RSVP today for Day One of Convocation on August 31, 2022.
