Enrollment management efforts continue to rise ahead of the fall semester. Enrollment stands at 18,236, an increase of 17% over the past week. SDCCE’s overall headcount is currently 10,682, an increase of 16% over the past week, and an increase of 42% compared to fall 2021. Events

The Educational Cultural Complex hosted the 2nd Annual Community Health and STEM Fest on Saturday August 27th. This was a San Diego based community event providing jobs, health screenings, immunizations, resources, and youth activities. It was an honor to present opening remarks for the day and VP Fischthal welcomed Councilwoman Monica Montgomery Steppe who hosted a fireside chat.

Program Updates

The Clothing and Textiles department started a new Fall 2022 Partnership with the SDSU graduate school of Technical Design for Theatre, Television and Film. The Director of the SDSU Master of Fine Arts in Technical Design for Theatre, Television and Film program, Professor Denitsa Bliznakova, has arranged for her graduate students to begin taking classes in the new Fiber Tech lab at West City Campus.

Dean Cassandra Storey attended a behavioral health workforce symposium last week looking at how industry and education can build a better pipeline to address the workforce shortage. ESL welcomed a new member to the adjunct teaching corps, Henry Nguyen, who began his journey as an ESL student at Mid-City Campus in 2010 and who will now teach at SDCCE and City College this fall.

Foundation Updates

SDCCE Foundation Executive Director, Dr. Laurie Coskey, met with San Diego County Foundation Directors to network around supporting the county’s community colleges and collaborating on county wide initiatives that would bring additional student supports and workforce development.

SDCCE will be closed Monday, September 5, in observance of Labor Day.

I look forward to the start of the fall semester together, beginning Tuesday, September 6.

Have a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Best,

Dr. King
