Dear SDCCE Community,
Latinx/Chicanx Heritage Month is here! As we dive into the month, let's come together to celebrate and honor the rich and vibrant cultures, histories, and contributions of Latinx/Chicanx and Hispanic communities. From September 15th to October 15th, we have the opportunity to embrace diversity, educate ourselves, and engage in meaningful events, workshops, and conversations that enrich our campus life. Please refer to the attached flyer for more details about upcoming events.
The Kick Off Celebration takes place tomorrow, September 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Educational Cultural Complex. Enjoy live music by Mariachi Real, Mexican heritage and cultural presentation, and street tacos.

In honor of Latinx/Chicanx Heritage Month, I would
like to share the amazing story of Josue Aguero.
Josue moved to San Diego from Mexico at just ten years old with his family seeking better opportunities
and a promising education. Today he is working on the city's newest destination property as part of a union, an opportunity he achieved through SDCCE's High Roads Construction Apprenticeship Readiness Program.
Read his full story in our SDCCE News Room.
Last week College Facilities and Operations and the
Be Well CCE team were invited to the BKM showroom

Janisha Street (not pictured), Jeremy Garcia, Dean Michele Madrid Novak and Anthony Vargas toured
the area in search of inspiration to build a beautiful space for our students in need of emotional
wellbeing and mental wellness support.

I recently had the opportunity to co-author “Leading With Equity: Transforming Community Colleges for the Future,” with Drs. Clyne G. H. Namuo, and Nicholas C. Neupauer in The NISOD Papers, where we offered a unique perspective on how community colleges can adapt, innovate, and lead with an unwavering commitment to equity. Thank you to my co-authors and to NISOD for providing a platform to speak on such an important topic!
Learn more about The NISOD Papers here.
I also recently had the opportunity to co-author "Behind the Desk: Perspectives of Black Community College CEOs" in Diverse: Issues In Higher Education with colleagues Dr. Jamal Cooks, President of Chabot College, and Dr. David M. Johnson, President of Merritt College. In this inaugural article, which is part of a 12-month series on the subject, we discuss the experiences and perspectives we bring to bear in the service of our students, institutions, and communities.
The San Diego Community College District has officially introduced its comprehensive new branding, including a new visual identity system and “Be. Belong. Become.” tagline. You can access the new District and refreshed College logos at sdccd.edu/brand.
Additionally, today the District is launching a redesigned website at https://www.sdccd.edu/. The website, redesigned to be more student-friendly and easier to navigate, showcases the new branding and visual identity.

It was a pleasure to host the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) at our North City Campus last week and celebrate SDCCE's recognition as the senate's 117th member! For the first time in SDCCE history, the senate has recognized SDCCE's student leadership as an official organized student body.
On Saturday, SDCCE faculty member Helena Wei was
joined by visual artist Ruoying Tang and literary
performance artist Tara Gilboy for the “Pairing of Great Art Forms: Piano Music vs. Paintings and
Poetries” performance at Rancho Bernardo Library.
Professor Wei's performance was inspired by her passions and the way she teaches music to adult students through our Emeritus Program.
Thank you Professor Wei for your continued community engagement and for sharing SDCCE's work throughout San Diego!

For SDCCE professional development opportunities, see flyer or visit the professional development web page for upcoming workshops.

President's Updates

I enjoyed attending the San Diego Latina Leader Convening, “Latina Futures: The State of Latinas in California” hosted by MANA de San Diego. The room was filled with inspiring women who are working hard to advance policies that impact Latinas!
I also enjoyed attending the Promises2Kids Dream on Concert Gala with the SDCCE Foundation. What an experience for such a great cause!
