Dear SDCCE Community,

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, please join me through October 15th in recognizing the cultures and contributions of our students, employees, and community who come from and whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Enrollment continues to be strong for the fall semester. SDCCE’s overall enrollment stands at 20,930 (12% greater than this time last year). While Latinx students make up about 34% of SDCCE’s student populations, Latinx students are still one of the most underrepresented ethnic groups across academia. Thank you for always reminding our students that embracing their cultural roots is beautiful and for lighting their pathway to excel in career and college — Citizenship Graduate Felipe Zuniga shares his story on immigrating from Mexico in this video and Cybsersecurity Graduate Jessly Altamirano from Nicaragua shares her story in this video.

With my own personal roots it is an honor to announce being featured in the September edition of Diverse Issues in Higher Education Magazine as SDCCE’s first Afro-Latina president. Learn more about my story on page 7 here.

Please join our students in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month:

Radio Latina kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month at the Educational Cultural Complex with the latest Latin hits, salsa dance contests, and giveaways for students. Check out the photo album.

The Associated Student Body (ASB) at each of SDCCE's seven campuses will be celebrating the month with different events. SDCCE ASB leaders will create displays at their campuses of Hispanic/Latino people that have greatly influenced Hispanic/Latino culture across the world.

Cesar Chavez ASB will host a table and cultural display on September 29th, from 10:00am-11:30am to highlight Hispanic history.

SDCCE will host a student art exhibition and contest “A Celebration of Culture, Community, and Courage” on October 13th, from 1:30pm – 3:30pm at Cesar Chavez Campus. View contest guidelines.

Lastly, the district is hosting events all month long that are free and open to the public, view schedule. To share your support, SDCCE's Hispanic Heritage Month social media assets are available for download here.

Best,
