Dear SDCCE Community,

Thank you to everyone who joined us in kicking off Latinx/Chicanx Heritage Month celebrations last week! Our kick-off event featured live music from Mariachi Real de San Diego and delicious street tacos. It was also a chance for students, staff, and faculty to experience vibrant traditional tunes and gain insights into Mexican culture. View event photos on the SDCCE Flickr.

More events are coming, see the full flyer of events to the right!

This week, we’re excited to kick off the filming of our CTE Program sizzle videos led by the Communications and Creative Services team and our video partners at Building, Inc. Today, they captured footage featuring our Healthcare, Clothing and Textiles, and HVAC programs and will continue to capture other programs throughout the week. I can’t wait to showcase these incredible videos on our new website and across our social media platforms to visually tell the story of SDCCE. Stay tuned for more updates!

More events for Latinx/Chicanx Heritage Month are coming up! The next event will be "Wellness Without Wax" on September 24 from 12:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., an intimate workshop from our Pathways Program to help ALL students explore their perfect imperfections. RSVP at bit.ly/Wellnesswithoutwax!

Our Cultural Events Task Force is also hosting Loteria events for Latinx/Chicanx Heritage Month! Join us for snacks, drinks, and prizes! The first game will be on Friday, September 26 at ECC.

The Associated Students of the College of Continuing Education (ASCCE) are launching Spirit Week! Every month, usually around the fourth week of the month, the entire college community will be encouraged to participate in wearing particular apparel, or going on a campus and community scavenger hunt, or submitting pictures and stories related to the theme for the week.

This month, Spirit Week is September 23 - 27; the theme is PURPLE POWER!!

The college community is encouraged to wear their best purple attire this week! All community members, but especially students, are urged to connect with classmates and friends on- and off-campus; and with their faculty, classified professionals, and administrators on campus, take pictures together to commemorate the start of our new year.

Students who post their pictures-in-purple to public social media with #SDCCEPurplePower will be entered into a drawing for one of four (4) $25 All-In-One gift cards, good for 100s of retailers! This is courtesy of your Associated Students, in partnership with the SDCCE Foundation.

In observance of Suicide Prevention Month, the Be Well CCE Mental Health Team is hosting a suicide prevention training with our partners, the Suicide Prevention Council at CHIP on Wednesday, September 25, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m at the Cesar E. Chavez Campus. Attendees will discuss the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to respond and have the chance to ask questions and learn about local resources.

The Research Corner

This week, we invite you to check the research paper Working Towards an Equitable Future in California Dual Enrollment Programs by Rogelio Salazar from the University of California, Los Angeles. This study looks into what type of equity work is being done in the Black and Latinx students in dual enrollment programs and how the collaboration within colleges and high schools impacts this group of students. The research paper may be found on the following link: https://escholarship.org/uc/item/8682z75j. Please take a minute to review this resource and email jsalcedo001@sdccd.edu if you have any questions.
