Dear SDCCE Community,

Thank you to SDCCE team members Richard Gholson, Brenna Leon Sandeford, Jesus Rivas, Sany Ramirez, Haydee Zuniga, and Dr. Minou Spradley for attending the second annual Vision 2030: Noncredit Summit last week in Anaheim, CA, and representing SDCCE as a leader in noncredit education! Our team of SDCCE attendees had the opportunity to convene with noncredit and adult education leaders across California and participate in multiple panels and presentations to highlight our noncredit work at SDCCE.

The event delved into regulations governing noncredit education, available financial resources, outreach, and marketing strategies, data for informed decision-making, and data-reporting requirements. Participants received practical information on establishing and expanding noncredit programs and services at community college campuses statewide and learned about innovative and effective noncredit programs designed to meet the needs of local communities.

This week, I am so excited to spotlight SDCCE's LGBTQ+ champion, Dr. Lisa Carulli in honor of National Coming Out Day, this Friday, October 11!

Professional surfer and longtime educator Lisa Carulli, Ed.D., is making waves of change at SDCCE. Thanks to Dr. Carulli, we've seen the most support for the LGBTQIA+ community in SDCCE's 110-year history in recent years.

“I've been working for the district for over two decades and I have never felt the need to sensor or edit who I am. I feel supported not only from the chancellor’s office but throughout the entire organization. No one should feel unsafe or unwelcomed because of who they are. As an educator, I want to be an advocate for our marginalized student population. I don’t want anyone to go through what I went through growing up in Florida, trying to earn a spot on the world’s stage as a professional surfer." — Dr. Lisa Carulli, Counselor/ LGBTQ+ Student Success Coordinator

To advance LGBTQIA+ equality on campus, Dr. Carulli has co-led the institution’s inaugural Intersex Inclusive Progressive Pride Flag raising ceremony in 2023 alongside the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) and the first diversity, equity, and inclusion campaign “Hate is Not Us” in 2015. Now she leads Safe Zone Trainings, teaching the importance of using inclusive language and is a member of the SDCCD District Queer Alliance.

A huge thank you to our IT team for their work in updating projectors and instructional technology for our classrooms at CE Mesa! We are confident that this upgrade will provide significant long-term benefits for both our faculty and students.

President's Updates

Nandi participants Nandi participants Nandi participants Nandi participants

I was truly inspired by my time during the 2024 Nandi Conference! Nandi is a non-profit organization and professional network comprised of women of African Ancestry and other communities who serve to inspire, support, nurture, mentor, and empower community college women students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Gathering with 300 incredible women to celebrate Black women liberation, sisterhood, authenticity, connection, and joy was nothing short of transformative.

Latinx Empowerment Panelests

I was also honored to serve as a panelist for the inaugural Latinx Empowerment Panel at SDCCE, where I joined fellow Latinx leaders in higher education to discuss how our identities and cultural backgrounds have shaped our professional journeys and leadership styles. A heartfelt thank you to the Cultural Events Taskforce for organizing yet another wonderful event!
