Dear SDCCE Community,

October has been filled with a tremendous push forward for noncredit education and our students. SDCCE continues to be a leading institution for California Community Colleges and our neighbors. Thank you for your commitment in making SDCCE the best place to study, work, and transform lives.

Campus Updates

This past week, great things happened at SDCCE:

  • I hosted a meeting with the SDCCE Foundation’s community partners, Cal Coast Credit Union at the Cesar Chavez campus for a tour and partnership development alongside Dr. Carter and Dr. Coskey. The tour included a potential opportunity to offer financial literacy to SDCCE students from high school to emeritus at the Mid-City, Chavez and ECC campuses. Mid-City Campus hosted the district’s Coffee with a Cop event and internship program, MAKE Projects.
  • Due to Kelly Henwood’s advocacy during the San Diego Promise Zone meetings, Mid-City is a host site for the City of San Diego’s Digital Navigator program. SDCCE students and members of the community can access Digital Navigators for support with technology and wifi needs, learn more on NBC San Diego.
  • ECC welcomed Project New Village and key members of philanthropic groups to present their latest community initiative, which will bring more healthy food access to Southeastern San Diego. View photos of the event.
  • SDCCE is back in communication with Jewish Family Services to establish a partnership with their organization to benefit our Older Adult students. SDCCE hosted approximately 80 students from Lincoln High School on October 3, 2022, for a brief presentation in the ECC Theatre and a campus tour.
  • As one of the focus areas that I am thrilled about is the work that our college will lead for the noncredit to credit alignment pathways. SDCCE held a site visit for the Noncredit to Credit Alignment (NCAL) project, our college is one of fourteen institutions across the country selected for the NCAL Initiative by the ACCT Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) and Education Strategy Group (ESG). In particular our district is focusing on improving SDCCE’s Non-credit/Credit pathways for our Child Development and Healthcare education for this grant project. In the coming weeks I will host a Kick-Off NCAL event joining will be Dean Jacqueline Hester and our credit college presidents with their teams to join us on this journey. To further highlight the importance of noncredit pathways, Chancellor Carlos Cortez discusses noncredit work as former SDCCE president and now chancellor with Illumination by Modern Campus, listen here.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, please invite your students to this upcoming event. SDCCE will host a student art exhibition and contest “A Celebration of Culture, Community, and Courage” on October 13th, from 1:30pm – 3:30pm at Cesar Chavez Campus. View contest guidelines.

Looking Forward

The President's Office with the SDCCE Foundation submitted a grant to the Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE): Fund for the improvement of postsecondary education "Basic Needs for Postsecondary Students" program. The request, driven by Dr. King requests $950,000 per year for three years for innovative student support.

Employee Highlights

  • SDCCE’s OER Faculty Coordinator, Diana Vera -Alba, was selected for the Creative Commons Certificate Bootcamp that will be held from 01/09/23 to 01/13/23 in San Bruno, CA.
  • Dr. Carter, Dean Luedtke, and Research Analyst Jesus Rivas presented at the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) Conference this past Sunday October 9, 2022, on Student-Centered Practices Supporting Binational Adults on U.S.A - Mexico Border.
