Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging (SIB) Task Force Updates

The Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging (SIB) Task Force meets monthly to further our conversations on continuing to implement proactive strategies for tracking students who are facing immigration challenges, as well as the importance of reporting any sightings of ICE on campus to the Chancellor or District General Counsel. Reports of ICE near campus (off campus) should first be directed to the COS, who, in collaboration with the Deans, will take appropriate and informed next steps to address the situation.

In our meeting last week, we covered cultivating safety and belonging for students, staying grounded in the work, reviewed resources, fundraising opportunities, and marketing materials such as posters, new buttons, and stickers that will be shared soon.

Please take a moment to review the safety cards for navigating ICE incidents on campus, which were distributed during Convocation. These resources are designed to guide employees on the steps for reporting.

This week’s Classified Professional Spotlight shines on our Instructional Assistant in Computer Science and Vice President of the Classified Senate, Trenton Romero! Trenton also expands student opportunities by partnering with organizations like the San Diego Futures Foundation (SDFF) to connect students with non-paid IT internships. Grateful for the chance to support meaningful work, Trenton continues to make a positive and lasting impact through his dedication, teamwork, and student-centered approach.

I want to take a moment to highlight our associated students and the advocacy they have been displaying. A Resolution to Ensure Equitable Access to School Resources for Non-Credit Students will be brought to the ASCCE by the Region X Vice-Chair at the December 15 meeting.

  • Kudos to Neill Kovrig, our Student Services Technician, for actively advocating for increasing the student government budget, emphasizing the need for stronger resources to support student programs and engagement. Thanks to his efforts, the budget was increased by $30,000, creating new opportunities to better serve the student body.

President's Updates

  • I had the privilege of attending the Community College League of California (CCLC) 2025 Annual Convention, where this year’s theme—Focus—served as a powerful reminder to center our work on the mission, on equity, and on our students. In a hyperconnected and often uncertain world, our attention is easily scattered by endless to-do lists, constant notifications, and the pace of everyday demands. The convention invited us to reflect: What would our lives look like if we could fully direct our attention to what truly matters? How much greater could our impact be if we were empowered to do one thing—and do it well? With focus, we serve with deeper intention, lead with clearer purpose, and move forward with renewed direction.
  • I am honored to receive the Community Activist of the Year Award from the Blue Heart Foundation. The Blue Heart Foundation, established in 2013, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth organization dedicated to supporting underserved African American male youth.
  • I appreciated having HGA Architects join the recent Executive President's Cabinet meeting to review finishes, designs, updates, and materials for ECC campus spaces associated with the Bond Projects.
  • Please note that my President’s Message, Social Media Edition, will resume next week after the Thanksgiving holiday. I encourage each of you to take this time to rest, recharge, and enjoy moments with friends, family, and loved ones. Wishing you a season filled with gratitude!
