High School Equivalency Preparation

Program Overview

Courses are offered for 9 weeks to help you be prepared to take and pass the GED or HiSET subject exams. You will be placed in courses in the following subject areas to meet your learning needs and get you ready to take the GED 4-subject or the HiSET 5-subject exams. Our High School Equivalency Preparation (HSEP) is offered in both English and Spanish.

High School Equivalency Preparation program (HSEP) are offered in levels 1 and level 2. Generally, level 1 are for those with skill levels below 8th grade and level 2 is for those with skill levels above 8th grade. Students who satisfactorily complete courses in the certificate level 2 program are given practice tests to see if they are ready to take and pass the HiSET or GED exams.

  • Writing level 1 & 2
  • Mathematics level 1 & 2
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Course Descriptions

This course introduces and reviews basic math skills including computation of whole and rational numbers, data analysis, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Upon completion and demonstration of competence, students will be prepared to continue instruction in HSEP for Mathematics 2.

Recommended Skill level: Grade level equivalent in math of 4.0-7.9. Advisory: Foundational Math.

HSEP 400 - 90 HOUR COURSE

*Students are expected to spend approximately 10 hours of study time per week per class

This course introduces and reviews reading skills in the areas of reading comprehension, vocabulary, and the critical thinking needed in order to prepare for a High School Equivalency Exam. Upon completion and demonstration of competence, students will be prepared for HSEP 2 level courses.

Recommended Skill Level: Grade level equivalent in reading of 4.0-7.9

HSEP 402 - 90 HOUR COURSE

*Students are expected to spend approximately 10 hours of study time per week per class

This course introduces and reviews writing skills. The focus is on writing, spelling, grammar, communication, and critical thinking. Upon completion and demonstration of competence, students will be prepared for HSEP for Writing 2.

Recommended Skill Level: Grade level equivalent in reading of 4.0-7.9

HSEP 404 - 90 COURSE HOURS

*Students are expected to spend approximately 10 hours of study time per week per class

The HSEP for Mathematics 2 course provides instruction in critical thinking in the context of algebra and geometry. This course is designed to prepare students to pass a high school equivalency examination in mathematics.

Recommended skill level: Grade level equivalent in math of 8.0 or above. Advisory: Math 1.

HSEP 401 COURSE HOURS 90

*Students are expected to spend approximately 10 hours of study time per week per class

High School Equivalency Preparation (HSEP) for Reading 2 is offered as an alternative instructional approach to the High School Diploma Program; and, is designed to prepare students to pass a high school equivalency examination in reading.

HSEP 403 - 90 COURSE HOURS

*Students are expected to spend approximately 10 hours of study time per week per class

High school equivalency preparation (HSEP) for Writing is offered as an alternative instructional approach to the High School Diploma Program and is designed to prepare students to pass a high school equivalency examination in writing.

HSEP 405 - 90 COURSE HOURS

*Students are expected to spend approximately 10 hours of study time per week per class

High school equivalency preparation (HSEP) for Science is offered as an alternative instructional approach to the High School Diploma Program and is designed to prepare students to pass a high school equivalency examination in science.

HSEP 406 - 90 COURSE HOURS

*Students are expected to spend approximately 10 hours of study time per week per class

High school equivalency preparation (HSEP) for Social Studies is offered as an alternative instructional approach to the High School Diploma Program and is designed to prepare students to pass a high school equivalency examination in social studies.

HSEP 407 - 90 COURSE HOURS
