Dear SDCCE Community,
All minority populations have been affected by the Supreme Court’s recent affirmative action decision. The San Diego College of Continuing Education will continue to welcome all students from every background into our college and further our commitment toward equity and open access. Please take a moment to read a commentary I authored about affirmative action for The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Additionally, I am pleased to announce that the construction of the new Educational Cultural Complex Student Lounge is nearing completion. Electricians were out to provide power to the furniture last Thursday. The installation of security cameras, vending machines, and the accessible push-panel door opener is underway. This is exciting news, as our students will be able to study, have access to healthy snacks, and socialize with their peers while taking classes on our campus.
Meanwhile, the construction of the new SDCCE Research Center at the North City Campus is complete, and professional staff have begun moving in.
We are preparing for the grand openings of the Student Lounge and the Research Center. Information about the grand openings will be sent out shortly with more details for both events.

President's Updates

I had the privilege of visiting our Business Information Worker classroom at the Educational Cultural Complex last week. It was beautiful to hear about the experiences from our students, their goals, triumphs, and their needs. Thank you, Professor Allie Casarda, for welcoming me into your classroom. The possibilities to thrive in the San Diego workforce for business and administrator professionals are endless. View the photos, which will be highlighted as student success stories across SDCCE.
The Research Corner
This week, we invite you to check out a resource developed by our partners from the Centers of Excellence for Labor Market Research, the Perkins V Comprehensive Regional Needs Assessment. This report includes qualitative information from 48 semi-structured interviews conducted in 2021 from two groups: individuals from special populations and representatives from community-based organizations providing services to special populations. This study was conducted to support the San Diego and Imperial Counties Community Colleges with their Comprehensive Local Needs Assessment process (required by Perkins V). Take a minute to review this resource and email jrivas@sdccd.edu if you have any questions.
