On June 27, SDCCE attended the San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce "Celebrating Black Excellence and Milestones" event. Dr. Jared Burns, our new Vice Chancellor of People, Culture, and Technology Services at the San Diego Community College District, was recognized along with other San Diego leaders.
As a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet, Dr. Burns' responsibilities will include planning, developing, and managing the district’s comprehensive People, Culture, and Technology Services programs; monitoring proposed and enacted changes in regulations impacting employment and technology services in the California community college system; representing the district on local, state and national committees; and ensuring timely submission of reports to local, state and federal regulators.
Thank you to our Counselor/LGBTQ+ Student Success Coordinator Dr. Lisa Carulli for highlighting impactful LGBTQ+ icons in your email series in celebration of Pride Month! The latest icon to be featured is American scholar Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa. Gloria Anzaldúa was a transformative figure in cultural theory, queer theory, and Chicana feminism, leaving a profound impact on the LGBTQ community and academic discourse. Her work broke new ground by exploring the intersections of identity, culture, and sexuality, challenging conventional notions of fixed identity and advocating for a more inclusive and fluid understanding of self.

President's Updates

On June 26th, I had the pleasure of providing a keynote at the Rise San Diego Urban Leadership Fellows Program Cohort 9 Graduation hosted at the Educational Cultural Complex Theatre. I am inspired by the authenticity and fearlessness of the leaders who have finished the program and who will continue to make great changes here in San Diego!
I enjoyed attending the California Community Colleges Black CEO Retreat hosted by the USC Race and Equity Center and Dr. Shaun Harper. We focused on community, personal wellness, financial education, Black-centric yoga, box breathing, and many more techniques to keep us healthy and whole in our role as college presidents.
It was an honor to join my fellow San Diego Community College District college presidents at the “Building a Future Together, A Community Celebration to Welcome Chancellor Gregory Smith” event last week. I look forward to working together with our district leadership as we uplift individuals and communities through higher education. View more photos from the event here.
The Research Corner
This week, we invite you to check the report The Transition to College: Voices From the Class of 2023 from Policy Analysis for California Education. The document examines the experiences of California high school seniors from the graduating class 2023, highlighting their preparation, plans, and concerns for college before enrollment. The findings from a large-scale survey reveal significant variations in secondary school experiences and college plans, particularly by race/ethnicity and gender identity, offering valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners. Please take a minute to review this resource and email jsalcedo001@sdccd.edu if you have any questions.
