Dear SDCCE Community,

SDCCE Pride HatFor the second year in a row, my family and I are thrilled to walk in the annual Pride Parade this coming Saturday in Hillcrest, and I encourage you all to join the San Diego College of Continuing Education as we proudly support the LGBTQIA+ community. Students, faculty, administrators, and classified professionals will march under the San Diego Community College District banner during the July 15 event that draws up to 100,000 spectators. This year’s parade theme is "Thrive!"

Once again, we will be giving away SDCCE Pride t-shirts, hats, and sunglasses while supplies last!

Culinary Arts students at the San Diego College of Continuing Education demonstrated their skills during an end-of-year reception, catering to family, friends, and community partners. Congratulations to our student chefs!

San Diego College of Continuing Education has helped students become U.S. citizens at no cost for more than 100 years. Telemundo reporter Sergio Flores recently visited the Mid-City Campus to learn more. Watch the feature segment on Telemundo.

Time Magazine, AP News, and The San Diego Union-Tribune also highlighted citizenship classes at the SDCCE.

MAKE Project, in partnership with SDCCE’s ESL Department, was awarded a state Employment Development Department grant of over $1 million in WIOA Governor's Discretionary funds. MAKE Project is among seven organizations that will serve as a lead grantee for this year's Employment Social Enterprise (ESE) Program and will offer a one-of-a-kind “work and learn” workforce development program to provide living-wage pathways for refugee and immigrant women. This will serve as a unique employment social enterprise in San Diego, operating an urban farm, restaurant, and events/catering company. As part of the design, SDCCE will provide English as a Second Language courses and career certificate programs. Way to go, Dean Jan Jarrell, Kelly Henwood, Anchi Mei, and team!

The San Diego Union-Tribune highlighted the San Diego College of Continuing Education's Juneteenth event in Opinion: Diversity in San Diego’s art scene is progressing, but there is more work to be done, a commentary written by Leah Goodwin.

The July Student Newsletter was sent to current and prospective students on July 6.

President's Updates

I am proud to announce that I have been nominated to serve on the AACC Commission on Economic and Workforce Development. The Commission on Economic and Workforce Development will be charged with examining ways to close the skills gaps by focusing on career education and preparing students with the education and skills required for jobs in regional and global economies. I will utilize this role to support and advance the work that we do at SDCCE!

The Research Corner

This week, we invite you to check out a resource developed by our partners from the California Community College Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO), the Adult Education Pipeline Dashboard. The dashboard provides comprehensive, multi-level data on student demographics, enrollment, outcomes, types of services received, and employment using adult education data and accountability metrics. Take a minute to review this resource and email if you have any questions.

Open Surveys: We recently launched the 2023 SDAER Consortium Effectiveness Survey. If you have completed this survey already, we thank you for participating. Otherwise, if you have contributed to the SDAERC either as an official SDAERC voting member or in some other capacity on behalf of one of the Consortium Member Agencies, SDUSD, or SDCCE, please take a couple of minutes to complete this survey; your input will help in the continuous development, effectiveness, and accountability of the SDAER Consortium.
