Dear SDCCE Community,

Enrollment is underway for the fall semester, and students are now registering for classes and certificate programs as we get nearer to an exciting new semester at SDCCE. With each academic year comes the celebration of Fall Convocation. Convocation this year will be held on August 30 at the ECC Theatre. Event details will follow. Stay tuned!

Participants toured SDCCE campuses, including the welding, plumbing, and HVAC certificate programs, to learn about career pathways, transition to college, and workforce opportunities.

The Jackie Robinson YMCA will host its monthly Community Health & Resource Fair on Wednesday, August 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free shuttle rides are available to and from the Educational Cultural Complex.

Professional clothing for interviews

SDCCE's Start Here. Start Now. Reg Fests have been widely successful for the month of July! Prospective and current students are connecting with SDCCE employees about free classes and career pathways, and among the recourses available are professional clothing for job interviews and the workplace. Please join us for the next round of Reg Fests in August:

  • August 8 - Mid-City Campus, 3 PM to 6 PM
  • August 9 - North City Campus, 3 PM to 6 PM
  • August 16 - ECC, 3 PM to 7 PM

Educational Cultural Complex RenovationA community town hall will be held on August 16 for a schematic design presentation of the ECC Theatre remodel. The current projection to start construction is April 2025.

SDCCE deans Andrei Lucas and Dr. Jacqueline Hester have been selected to participate in the ALIVE academy, a professional growth opportunity sponsored by the Chief Instructional Officers organization. Congratulations, Dean Lucas and Dean Hester! We are eager to share your wealth of knowledge learned here for SDCCE.

SDCCE Dean Jan Jarrell was invited to join the Hansen Leadership Institute's Women in Leadership Panel on July 5. The Hansen Leadership Institute, a nonprofit operating under the umbrella of the Fred J. Hansen Foundation, is a three-week program in leadership, conflict resolution and mediation, social justice, public speaking, social entrepreneurship, U.S. government, and politics held at the University of San Diego.

SDCCE ESL faculty Kelly Metz-Matthews and Doria Ruhl have had their article "Formalizing Mentorship in Adult Education and Beyond" accepted in the peer-reviewed Coalition on Adult Basic Education Journal for the fall Professional Development issue.

Some 92% of WiFi access points have been installed at all SDCCE campuses. The next step is to connect all access points to the new switches, followed by configuration and testing, with a target completion set for the beginning of fall 2023. A comprehensive communication plan is being developed between IT and the district PIO office regarding instructions and credentials for access.

The Educational Cultural Complex has experienced delays with remodeling the employee lounge due to a plumbing issue that caused a revision to the layout. The project is expected to be completed in the next couple of weeks.

The Research Corner

This week, we invite you to check out a resource developed by our partners from the California Community College Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO), the Salary Surfer Dashboard. The dashboard provides aggregated data from the earnings of community college graduates over a multi-year period documenting how much students earned two years and five years after receiving a certificate or degree in certain disciplines. This tool also provides information on which colleges offer programs in those specific disciplines and videos about these programs. Take a minute to review this resource and email if you have any questions.

President's Office Hours

President's Office Hours are back! Individual Zoom meetings will be 20 minutes and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you would like to schedule a virtual appointment with me, please email for detailed information.

Best,

Dr. King
