President King helping with SDCEATS

Dear SDCCE Community,

I hope you all had a restful holiday break and that it was a time of reflection and gratitude. Leading up to Thanksgiving, I had the joy of joining the SDCCE Cares team to distribute more than 150 grocery bags to our students and their families. There are still many students in need; if possible, please help SDCCE and the SDCCD "Pack the Pantry"! California Coast Credit Union and the San Diego Food Bank are hosting the fourth annual Pack the Pantry event to support local college students facing food insecurity throughout the month of November. Donate here.

Currently, wearing a face mask is a requirement and is still in effect at all district locations and district-sponsored events including SDCCE campuses. Effective December 19, 2022, the District will no longer require face coverings on district property. To learn more visit SDCCD's News Center. To learn more visit SDCCE’s Campus Ready web page.

Campus Updates

  • Today SDCCE will host its Historical Preservation Committee Meeting from 3:00-4:00 pm at the ECC foyer. Attendees will learn more about SDCCE’s Coretta Scott King Gospel Luncheon, which will be held in spring 2023, ECC’s Theater renovation update, and experience a photo timeline. Sam Kulani has created a walk-through gallery of vintage photos chronicling ECC's history from the mid 1970's.
  • SDCCE received the final redesign report for the historic ECC Theatre remodel. The proposal is truly a testament to the passionate folks advocating for this project on and off campus. SDCCE will soon move into the design phase of the remodel and renovations of our historic theatre.
  • Last week, I connected with a local prison step-down program with facilities in Barrio Logan and Southeast San Diego in order to enroll their residents in SDCCE classes, including High School Diploma/Equivalency, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Career Training Education (CTE) programs. My goal is to work on reducing recidivism rates through the many opportunities that we offer our community.
  • The Department of Education released the California Adult Education Digital Learning Guidance document to inform best practices across a variety of topics that are foundational to effective digital learning, beginning with access and equity. SDCCE’s Advisory Group members include Monica Cueva, Elisia Doonan, and Kelly Henwood.
  • I, alongside SDCCD Chancellor Cortez and SDCCE Foundation’s Executive Director, Laurie Coskey, visited the UCSD Design and Innovation Building to learn about the expanse of the metaverse and explore possibilities for future professions and career training at SDCCE for high-demand high-wage jobs.
  • SDCCE’s Apprenticeship Readiness Program, Dean Stephanie Lewis and Dr. Laurie Coskey joined a statewide caravan as they toured registered Apprenticeships in the Building Trades industry to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week.
  • SDCCE is transitioning from student attendance cards to issuing SDCCE students IDs beginning the spring semester, which will support students in their transition to a district college and allow them more access to public transportation and student discounts.
  • Eligible students can apply for SDCCE's State Emergency Aid Grants to support with financial needs up to $500.00.
  • Last week I sent out an email college-wide regarding guidance on spring 2023 remote work, please see https://sdcce.edu/organization/president/message-from-the-president/11-22-2022
